Description

At 1.9 x 15 mm the particle area is 28.5 mm² — just inside the 30 mm² ceiling for security level P-5, and the reason this machine is the highest-security P40i that still keeps HSM's five-year warranty and lifetime cutting-roller cover. It is the sweet spot of the range: micro-cut destruction, 19 to 21 sheets a pass, and none of the throughput penalty a P-7 machine imposes.

Key Features

  • P-5 at 1.9 x 15 mm — 28.5 mm² per particle against the 30 mm² class limit.
  • Still inside HSM's warranty band. Five years on the machine and a lifetime warranty on the cutting rollers, which HSM restricts to P-2 through P-5.
  • 19–21 sheets per pass from the 1,300 W motor, high for micro-cut in this cabinet size.
  • Integrated automatic oiler keeps the cutting head lubricated automatically, protecting sheet capacity over time.
  • 145-litre bin holding about 1,845 sheets of shredded material — the densest packing of any cut size in this cabinet bar P-7.
  • Safety element across the intake stops the feed under light pressure; automatic start/stop and jam prevention as standard.
  • 330 mm throat for letter, legal, A4, A3 and tabloid; approximately 55 dB(A) at idle.

What's in the Box

The shredder arrives assembled on its wheeled cabinet with the reusable collection insert already fitted in the 145-litre bin, plus the mains lead and operating manual. Disposable plastic sacks are not included — the P40i bin is built around a reusable corrugated insert, available as a replacement under part HSM1850BOX, which also fits the P36i and the 940 series.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Choose this where a policy or a client contract names P-5 — financial services, professional practices, HR functions, anywhere the paper carries account numbers or health information. It is also the pragmatic choice for organisations that want more than P-4 without accepting the 8-to-9-sheet throughput and shortened warranty of a P-7 machine.

It is not the machine for optical media: HSM rates the main head for paper with staples and paper clips plus credit cards, and if CDs and DVDs are part of the job you want article 1882121C, which is this exact shredder with a separate 4 x 7 mm media cutting unit. It is also not the machine if you have an NSA/CSS 02-01 requirement — that needs 1 x 5 mm and an EPL listing, which means the P40i 1 x 5 mm articles or the P36i L6 OMDD Combo. And if you are shredding bulk non-sensitive paper, the 3.9 mm P40i (1880121) does more than twice the volume per pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1.9 x 15 mm really P-5?

Yes. The particle area is 28.5 mm², and P-5 permits up to 30 mm². It sits just inside the boundary, which is why HSM lists this article as E-4, F-2, O-4, P-5, T-5. For comparison, P-4 allows up to 160 mm² and P-6 tightens to 10 mm² with a sub-millimetre width requirement that a 1.9 mm cut cannot meet.

Why does the warranty matter when comparing this to a P-6 or P-7 machine?

Because HSM draws the line at P-5. Its published terms give a five-year machine warranty and a lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers to SECURIO C, B and P shredders in security levels P-2 to P-5, and three years to everything else in the series. Going from this machine to a P-6 or P-7 model is a warranty downgrade as well as a throughput drop, and few suppliers say so.

Can it shred credit cards and CDs?

Credit cards, yes — HSM lists them for the main cutting unit. CDs and DVDs we cannot confirm for this article's main throat, and we would rather leave the row blank than guess. HSM's answer to optical media on this machine is article 1882121C, the same P40i with a separate media cutting unit that takes discs, cards and floppy disks down to 4 x 7 mm in a dedicated container.

How often will the bin need emptying?

The 145-litre bin holds roughly 1,845 sheets of shredded material at this cut size. Micro-cut particles settle well, which is why that figure beats every strip-cut version in the identical bin. A department feeding it three or four reams a week will empty it every couple of weeks.

Can it take staples and paper clips?

Yes. HSM lists paper with staples and paper clips for this article and the induction-hardened solid steel rollers are built for it. Remove bulldog clips, ring-binder mechanisms and plastic comb bindings — those are not on the rated list and will jam the throat rather than cut.

How does the automatic oiler work?

It is integrated into the machine and runs on its own schedule to keep the cutting head lubricated, which HSM describes as maintaining consistently high cutting capacity. HSM does not publish a refill interval or oil part number in the per-model datasheet, so ask us before you order if you need to budget consumables, and we will confirm the current specification with HSM.

Will 11 x 17 in tabloid fit?

Yes. The intake measures 330 mm (12.99 in), so tabloid fed short-edge first at 11 in passes through, as do letter, legal, A4 and A3. Feed oversize sheets flat and one or two at a time — folding a sheet counts double or triple against the 19-21 capacity.
