Description

This is the P36i 4.5 x 30 mm cross-cut shredder with a second, independent cutting unit bolted to the side for optical media. Paper goes through the main throat at P-4; CDs, DVDs, credit and loyalty cards and floppy disks go into the media unit and come out as 4 x 7 mm particles in their own waste container. Keeping the two streams apart is the point — disc fragments never touch the paper head.

Key Features

  • Two cutting units, two waste streams. The 4 x 7 mm media unit has its own container, so shredded plastic and aluminium never mix with paper waste you may want to recycle.
  • P-4 on paper, O-4 on optical media, T-5 on magnetic media — a higher media rating than the base 1853121, which is the reason the combined class string differs.
  • 27–29 sheets per pass at 80 g/m² through the 330 mm throat, unchanged from the standard model.
  • Integrated automatic oiler on the paper cutting head keeps capacity consistent over the life of the machine.
  • 145-litre paper bin holding about 1,773 sheets of shredded material.
  • Five-year warranty and lifetime cover on the solid steel cutting rollers.
  • EcoSmart standby at 0.1 W and automatic paper-jam prevention.

What's in the Box

The document shredder arrives assembled on its wheeled cabinet with the reusable collection insert fitted in the 145-litre bin, mains lead and manual. The separate media cutting unit ships as its own free-standing unit with its own small waste container. Disposable plastic sacks are not supplied; the replacement reusable insert for the main bin is part HSM1850BOX.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this if your destruction policy covers more than paper. IT departments decommissioning laptops, finance teams destroying expired cards, and clinics disposing of imaging discs all end up needing a rated media path, and bolting a separate unit onto a P-4 paper shredder is far cheaper than buying a second machine.

Skip it if optical media is a once-a-year event — the base P36i 4.5 x 30 mm (article 1853121) is the same shredder for meaningfully less, and it is 6 kg lighter. Skip it too if the paper itself needs better than P-4: the media unit does not raise the paper class. For P-5 paper with a media unit, look at the P40i 1.9 x 15 mm with CD unit (1882121C); for P-7 paper with an optical media destroyer, the P36i L6 OMDD Combo (1854123S).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the media unit change how securely paper is destroyed?

No. Paper still goes through the 4.5 x 30 mm main head at P-4. What changes is the rating for the other material classes: this article is listed by HSM as E-4, F-1, O-4, P-4, T-5, against E-3, F-1, O-3, P-4, T-4 for the base machine, because the 4 x 7 mm media unit destroys discs and cards far more finely than a paper head would.

Can I put CDs through the main paper throat instead?

Don't. The media unit exists so that hard, brittle material never reaches the paper cutting rollers. Optical media fed into a paper head chips the cutting edges, and chipped rollers lose sheet capacity permanently. Feed discs one at a time into the media unit and paper into the main throat.

What comes out of the media unit, and where does it go?

Particles of roughly 4 x 7 mm, collected in a small dedicated container on the unit itself rather than in the 145-litre paper bin. That separation is deliberate: shredded polycarbonate and aluminium are contaminants in a paper recycling stream, and keeping them apart means the paper waste stays recyclable.

Will it shred a stack of expired credit cards?

Yes, one card at a time through the media unit, which reduces credit and loyalty cards to 4 x 7 mm. HSM also lists floppy disks for this unit. It is not a hard-drive destroyer — a 2.5 in or 3.5 in drive needs a purpose-built hard drive shredder or degausser, not this.

Is it NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a 1 mm x 5 mm maximum residue for paper and the exact model must appear on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. This machine's paper cut is 4.5 x 30 mm. The P36i configuration that does appear on the January 2026 EPL is the "Securio P36i (L6) OMDD Combo", sold here as article 1854123S.

How much heavier is it than the standard model?

74 kg against 68 kg — the media unit and its container account for the difference. Both roll on castors, but at 74 kg it is a two-person lift over a threshold or into a lift, and worth mentioning to whoever takes the delivery.
