Description

The SECURIO P36i in 3.9 mm strip cut is the volume workhorse of the P36i range: it takes 34 to 36 sheets in a single pass and empties into a 145-litre bin, but it only reaches security level P-2. What separates it from its 5.8 mm sibling (article 1851121) is a narrower strip — same P-2 rating, slightly finer waste, nine fewer sheets per pass. Buy it when throughput and running cost matter more than the destruction standard.

Key Features

  • 34–36 sheets per pass through a 330 mm throat, so a stack of A4 or letter-size paper goes in without splitting it into handfuls.
  • 145-litre bin on a wheeled cabinet — the whole machine rolls to the point of use rather than living next to a desk.
  • Automatic start/stop. The rollers engage when paper is fed and stop when the throat clears; EcoSmart standby drops draw to 0.1 W.
  • Paper-jam prevention. The control electronics detect an over-thick feed and back the sheets out before the head stalls.
  • Induction-hardened solid steel cutting rollers that take staples and paper clips in their stride, covered for the life of the machine.
  • Safety element across the intake that halts the feed under light pressure.
  • Quiet enough for an open-plan floor: HSM measures approximately 55 dB(A) at idle.

What's in the Box

The shredder arrives fully assembled on its wheeled cabinet with the reusable collection insert already fitted in the 145-litre bin, plus the mains lead and operating manual. Disposable plastic shredder sacks are not included, and the P36i is not designed around them — HSM's bin uses a reusable corrugated insert, sold separately as a replacement under part HSM1850BOX (it also fits the P40i and the 940 series).

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 3.9 mm P36i if you shred high volumes of routine internal paperwork — delivery notes, drafts, duplicate print runs — and your retention policy does not specify a DIN class above P-2. It is the cheapest way to move a lot of paper through a departmental machine.

Do not buy it for personal data. P-2 leaves 3.9 mm strips that carry whole lines of text, and most GDPR-style and HIPAA-adjacent internal policies call for P-4 or finer. If that is your situation, step up to the P36i 4.5 x 30 mm (article 1853121, P-4), which still handles 27–29 sheets per pass. If you need micro-cut, the P40i 1.9 x 15 mm (1882121) is the closest sibling at P-5. And if you simply want the largest bite per pass and do not care about strip width, the 5.8 mm P36i (1851121) does 43–45 sheets for the same security level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this shredder take staples and paper clips?

Yes. HSM lists paper with staples and paper clips among the rated materials for this model, and the solid steel cutting rollers are induction-hardened for exactly that. You do not need to strip binder clips from every sheet before feeding. Large bulldog clips, ring-binder mechanisms and plastic comb bindings are a different matter — remove those, because they are not on HSM's list and can wedge in the throat.

Is 34-36 sheets a realistic number in day-to-day use?

It is HSM's own per-model figure at 80 g/m² paper, measured under controlled conditions. In an office it is a ceiling rather than an average. Paper that has been folded, stapled at the corner or run through a laser printer feeds thicker than flat stock, and HSM's separate overview brochure quotes the same machine higher because it uses lighter 70 g/m² paper. Plan around roughly 30 sheets per pass and you will not stall it.

How many sheets fit in the bin before it needs emptying?

HSM does not publish a collection-volume figure for this specific 3.9 mm article, so we will not quote one. For reference, the 5.8 mm P36i holds about 954 sheets of shredded material in the same 145-litre bin and the 3.9 mm P40i holds about 1,305 — strip cut is bulky, so a finer strip packs a little denser. Expect somewhere in that band and empty when the level reaches the window.

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

Yes. The throat is 330 mm (12.99 in) wide. US legal paper is 8.5 in across the short edge and 11 x 17 in tabloid is 11 in across, so both feed without folding. A3 (297 mm) also clears it. The limit is width, not length — long sheets simply take longer to pass through.

Is this machine NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a residue no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm and the specific model must appear on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. A 3.9 mm strip is nowhere near that. If you have an NSA requirement, look at the SECURIO P36i L6 OMDD Combo (article 1854123S), which is listed on the January 2026 EPL as "Securio P36i (L6) OMDD Combo".

Does it have an automatic oiler?

No, and it does not need one. HSM fits the integrated automatic oiler to the particle-cut P36i and P40i models, where the cutting head has far more contact surface. The strip-cut versions are not listed with it. Keep the throat clear of dust and the rollers will run without scheduled lubrication.

What warranty does it carry?

Five years on the machine and a lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers. HSM applies those terms to SECURIO C, B and P series shredders in security levels P-2 to P-5, which covers this model. Note that the same terms drop to three years with no lifetime roller cover on HSM's P-6 and P-7 machines — a point worth weighing if you are comparing this against the high-security versions.
