Description

HSM builds the 0.78 x 11 mm P-6 SECURIO P36i in two configurations, and this is the one with metal detection fitted alongside the separate 2 x 2 mm OMDD cutting unit. Everything about the destruction is identical to article 1855121M — P-6 paper, 11 to 13 sheets a pass, media reduced to 2 x 2 mm in its own container. The detection hardware is the whole reason to pay the difference.

Key Features

  • Metal detection on the paper path, HSM's designated protection against foreign metal reaching a fine cutting head.
  • P-6 micro-cut at 0.78 x 11 mm — 8.58 mm² per particle, under both the 10 mm² area limit and the 1 mm width limit for the class.
  • Separate OMDD cutting unit at 2 x 2 mm with a dedicated waste container for optical and magnetic media and payment cards.
  • Integrated automatic oiler maintaining cutting capacity on a head with a very high edge count.
  • 145-litre bin, roughly 1,446 sheets of shredded material between empties.
  • 330 mm throat and automatic start/stop with paper-jam prevention.
  • EcoSmart standby at 0.1 W; approximately 55 dB(A) at idle.

What's in the Box

The document shredder arrives assembled on its wheeled cabinet with the reusable collection insert fitted in the 145-litre bin, mains lead and manual. The separate media cutting unit ships as its own free-standing unit with its own small waste container. Disposable plastic sacks are not supplied; the replacement reusable insert for the main bin is part HSM1850BOX.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

The buyer for this article is a site where sensitive paper arrives from many hands and nobody can guarantee what is clipped to it — a central shredding station in a hospital records office, a law firm's file room, a government back office. A micro-cut head is expensive to repair, and detection that stops the feed before metal reaches it pays for itself the first time it works.

If paper reaches the machine already prepared by one team, the plain 1855121M gives you the identical P-6 result for less money. If you need throughput more than particle size, the P36i 4.5 x 30 mm (1853121) does 27–29 sheets a pass at P-4 and keeps HSM's five-year warranty and lifetime roller cover, which P-6 machines do not get. And if the requirement is actually NSA-listed destruction, neither 1855 article qualifies — look at the P36i L6 OMDD Combo (1854123S).

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does the metal detection do?

HSM designates this article as the metal-detection version and positions it as protection for the cutting head against foreign metal in the paper stream. HSM does not publish the detection threshold, the size of object it responds to, or the exact stop behaviour in the per-model datasheet, so we will not describe those. If the detail matters to your specification, ask us and we will get it in writing from HSM of America before you order.

Does metal detection mean I can shred anything metal?

No — it means close to the opposite. Detection exists to stop metal reaching the rollers, not to let it through. HSM's general SECURIO copy mentions the rollers coping with staples, but that statement spans the whole range and the per-article ratings for this P-6 machine cover paper, film, optical and magnetic media only. Keep de-stapling documents and treat detection as insurance against the ones that slip past.

Is 0.78 x 11 mm P-5 or P-6?

P-6. 0.78 x 11 mm is 8.58 mm², under the 10 mm² ceiling for P-6, and the 0.78 mm width meets the additional sub-millimetre requirement of that class. P-5 allows up to 30 mm². HSM's own listing for this article is E-5, F-3, O-6, P-6, T-6.

Is this machine NSA approved?

No. An NSA/CSS 02-01 claim requires a residue no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm and the specific model on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. This cut is 11 mm long. Metal detection has no bearing on the NSA question either way. The listed P36i configuration on the January 2026 EPL is the "Securio P36i (L6) OMDD Combo", article 1854123S.

Why does HSM list this as lighter than 1855121M?

HSM publishes 68 kg for this article and 74 kg for 1855121M, which is counter-intuitive given this one has more hardware. Both figures come straight from HSM's per-model data and we have reproduced them rather than smoothing them over. If the weight is load-bearing for a floor calculation or a lift, get it confirmed by HSM before you commit.

How does it compare with the P40i P-7 metal detection version?

Article 1884121N is the P40i at 1 x 5 mm, which is P-7 rather than P-6, with a 1,300 W motor and 9 sheets per pass instead of 11-13. It also comes with metal detection and a 2 x 2 mm OMDD unit. Choose the P40i if your specification names P-7 or NSA; choose this P36i if P-6 is sufficient and you want the higher sheet capacity and lower price.
