Description

A 0.78 x 11 mm particle is 8.58 mm² — inside the 10 mm² ceiling for security level P-6, and under the 1 mm width limit that class also imposes. That combination is worth stating plainly because the same cut is frequently mislabelled P-5 in the trade. Paired with a separate OMDD unit that takes optical and magnetic media down to 2 x 2 mm, this P36i is a two-stream high-security machine for a department that handles genuinely sensitive records.

Key Features

  • P-6 micro-cut at 0.78 x 11 mm — 8.58 mm² per particle against the 10 mm² class limit, and a sub-millimetre width.
  • Separate OMDD cutting unit at 2 x 2 mm with its own waste container for CDs, DVDs, credit and loyalty cards and floppy disks.
  • Integrated automatic oiler, which matters far more on a micro-cut head than a coarse one — more cutting edges, more friction.
  • 145-litre bin holding roughly 1,446 sheets of shredded material.
  • 330 mm throat, so oversize originals still feed without folding despite the fine cut.
  • 330 mm throat on a 580 x 550 mm footprint, so a machine this specialised still fits in a normal office corner.
  • EcoSmart standby at 0.1 W; approximately 55 dB(A) at idle.

What's in the Box

The document shredder arrives assembled on its wheeled cabinet with the reusable collection insert fitted in the 145-litre bin, mains lead and manual. The separate media cutting unit ships as its own free-standing unit with its own small waste container. Disposable plastic sacks are not supplied; the replacement reusable insert for the main bin is part HSM1850BOX.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

This suits legal, HR, clinical research and R&D teams whose retention policy names P-6, and who also need a defensible route for discs and cards. The separate OMDD unit is the reason to choose this over a plain micro-cut shredder: media never touches the paper head, and it is destroyed to 2 x 2 mm rather than merely cracked.

Do not buy it if you are shredding volume. Eleven to thirteen sheets per pass is roughly a third of what the P-4 version manages, and a P-6 machine used as a general office shredder becomes a queue. Pair it with a P-4 machine such as the P36i 1853121 for routine paper if that describes your floor. Also be aware of the warranty step: HSM's five-year term and lifetime cutting-roller cover apply to P-2 through P-5 only, so this model carries three years. If you need NSA-listed destruction rather than P-6, the P36i L6 OMDD Combo (1854123S) is the article to look at.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0.78 x 11 mm P-5 or P-6?

P-6. The particle area is 8.58 mm², which is inside the 10 mm² ceiling for P-6 rather than the 30 mm² ceiling for P-5, and the 0.78 mm width satisfies the additional sub-millimetre width requirement P-6 imposes. HSM lists this article as E-5, F-3, O-6, P-6, T-6. If you have seen this cut described as P-5 elsewhere, that listing is wrong.

Is it NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum residue of 1 mm x 5 mm and the specific model must be on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. This machine cuts 11 mm long, more than double the 5 mm limit, and P-6 is not the same thing as an NSA listing. The P36i variant that does appear on the January 2026 EPL is the "Securio P36i (L6) OMDD Combo", article 1854123S here.

Why is the warranty shorter than on the P-4 model?

Because HSM scopes it that way. Its published terms give a five-year machine warranty and a lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers to SECURIO C, B and P series shredders in security levels P-2 to P-5, and three years to all other SECURIO shredders. P-6 falls outside that band. It is a real trade-off and worth factoring into a total-cost comparison against the P-5 P40i (1882121).

Can it take staples and paper clips?

Our answer is: remove them. HSM's SECURIO P36i page carries a general line about the induction-hardened rollers coping with staples, but that line runs across the whole model range and the per-article material ratings for this P-6 machine are E-5, F-3, O-6, P-6 and T-6 — none of which covers fastenings. A 0.78 mm cutting head has very fine teeth and metal is what blunts them. If you cannot rely on documents arriving de-stapled, article 1855121N adds metal detection as a backstop.

How often will the bin need emptying?

The 145-litre bin holds about 1,446 sheets of shredded material at this cut size. Because throughput is only 11-13 sheets a pass, most departments find the bin lasts several weeks. Micro-cut waste is fine and dusty — empty it before it packs down hard against the door, or the insert becomes awkward to lift out.

What is the difference between this article and 1855121N?

1855121N is the same 0.78 x 11 mm P-6 machine with metal detection added. HSM lists the two with identical cut size, security class and 11-13 sheet capacity but different weights: 74 kg for this article and 68 kg for the metal-detection version. If the difference matters for a lift or a floor loading, confirm the figure with HSM before you order.

Will it handle a whole floor's shredding?

Realistically no, and it is not meant to. Eleven to thirteen sheets per pass suits a team that destroys sensitive documents in batches rather than an open-plan floor destroying everything. If it is the only machine on site, expect a queue by mid-afternoon. Most sites that buy P-6 run it alongside a P-4 machine for routine paper.
