The HSM SECURIO P36i 1/16 x 5/8 plus separate CD cutting unit (MPN 1852121C) is the P-5 departmental P36i with a second, dedicated slot that cuts CDs and DVDs to 4 x 7 mm. Paper still goes through the main cutter at 1.9 x 15 mm, 16-18 sheets per pass. This version is for offices that destroy optical media as a routine task and want those discs kept away from the paper rollers.

Why a second slot when the base model is already O-4?

The standard HSM1852 can take an occasional disc through its main throat. The argument for this version is wear, not capability. When discs are destroyed every week, polycarbonate going through the paper cutters adds wear that the document work never causes. A dedicated disc slot keeps the paper rollers on paper, and lets someone feed a stack of discs without interrupting a paper run.

The two units share one drive and one waste box. Feed paper or discs, not both at once, and be aware that disc fragments and paper particles end up mixed in the same liner, which matters if your disposal contract separates media streams.

Departmental features carried over from the P36i

The IntelligentDrive motor is rated for continuous running and offers performance, standard and silent settings. A 4.3 in touch display handles menus in several languages, jam prevention with automatic reverse and full-bin alerts. An integrated oiler lubricates the micro-cut rollers, and the 12.99 in (330 mm) throat takes A3, US letter or legal fed portrait. Waste collects in an HSM cardboard box liner for the P36i/P40i chassis behind a full-width door. Idle noise is about 55 dB(A); standby draw is 0.1 W.

Single-slot or dual-slot, P-5 or higher?

• P36i 1.9 x 15 mm (HSM1852): the same paper performance at 68 kg; enough if you meet a CD only a few times a year.
• P36i 1 x 5 mm (HSM1854): P-7 paper at 8 sheets, without the disc unit.
• P36 L6 OMDD Combo (HSM1854M): P-7 paper plus an O-6 media unit, on the NSA/CSS EPL, but with a 3-year warranty and no lifetime roller cover.

Is the CD unit worth it for you?

It pays off for IT departments, records offices and clinics that clear discs regularly alongside P-5 paper. A single user, or an office that rarely handles discs, is better served by the standard HSM1852 or a smaller machine, and anyone working to a classified-media standard should look at the OMDD versions and the NSA's media destruction list instead.
