Description

The C18 in 3.9 x 30 mm particle cut is the most capable P-4 machine in HSM's desk-side range: eight to nine sheets a pass, a 360 W motor, and a 25 l container that HSM rates at roughly 351 sheets of shredded paper - more than double what the strip-cut C18 holds in the same bin. If you want DIN 66399 P-4 without stepping up to a departmental machine, this is the top of that ladder. One thing it gives up against its strip-cut sibling: there is no O rating, so optical media are out. It is paper, cards and film only.

The bin figures are the most useful comparison against the strip-cut C18. Same 25 l container, but roughly 351 sheets of particle waste against about 165 sheets of strip waste - particles pack, strips do not. Combined with a heavier 360 W drive and an 11 kg build, this is the C-series machine that behaves most like a small office shredder rather than a personal one. HSM's 5-year machine warranty and lifetime cutting-roller warranty both apply.

Key Features

  • 3.9 x 30 mm particle cut (117 mm2), inside the 160 mm2 limit for DIN P-4
  • Eight to nine sheets a pass - the highest P-4 throughput in HSM's C-series
  • 360 W motor with overload protection, twice the power of the C16 chassis
  • 6.6 gallon (25 l) container rated at around 351 sheets of particle waste
  • 230 mm (9.06 in) throat for letter, legal and A4 fed portrait
  • Light barrier auto start/stop, reverse function, 0.1 W standby draw
  • Approximately 55 to 58 dB(A) at idle
  • Rated E-3, F-1 and T-4 in addition to P-4, covering cards and film
  • Eligible for HSM's 5-year machine warranty and lifetime cutting-roller warranty

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

This is the right machine for a small office where two or three people handle confidential paper and nobody wants to walk to a central shredder. P-4 covers most personal-data destruction policies, eight to nine sheets is enough that stapled sets do not need splitting into single pages, and the 351-sheet bin rating means emptying is a weekly job rather than a daily one. Two groups should look elsewhere. If you need to destroy CDs or DVDs, this model has no optical media rating at all - the HSM SECURIO C18 5.8 mm (HSM1911) is rated O-2, but only P-2 on paper. And if the machine will serve a whole department, or your policy requires P-5 or better, the HSM SECURIO P36i 1.9 x 15 mm (HSM1852) is the sensible step: P-5, O-4, 16 to 18 sheets, a 38.3 gallon bin and continuous operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it shred CDs or DVDs?

No. This variant carries E-3, F-1, P-4 and T-4 ratings but no O rating, so optical media are outside its specification and feeding a disc risks the cutting rollers. Within the C-series only the C18 5.8 mm strip-cut model is rated for optical media, at O-2. If you need both good paper security and disc destruction, the P36i range with a separate CD or OMDD cutting unit is the correct answer.

How many sheets can it take with staples in them?

HSM rates the machine at eight to nine sheets of 80 g/m2 paper and specifies that the induction-hardened rollers accept staples and paper clips. A stapled set of eight sheets is fine. What reduces capacity is the fold, not the staple - a folded bundle counts double. Remove binder clips, bulldog clips and plastic spines before feeding.

How often will the bin need emptying?

HSM rates the 25 l container at approximately 351 sheets of shredded paper. At 60 to 80 pages a day that is about a week. Particle waste packs far denser than strip waste, which is why this model holds more than twice as much paper as the strip-cut C18 in the identical container. There is an inspection window for checking the level.

Will legal-size paper feed properly?

Yes. The throat is 230 mm (9.06 in) wide. US legal paper is 8.5 in wide - the same as letter, just longer - so it feeds portrait without folding. Tabloid at 11 in wide does not fit and must be folded, which then counts as two sheets against the capacity. A4 at 210 mm also feeds normally.

Can several people share it?

Two or three light users, yes. This is still a personal-class machine: intermittent duty cycle, 6.6 gallon bin, no continuous-run rating. Beyond about three regular users you will hit the duty cycle before you hit the bin, and the queue becomes the bottleneck. HSM's departmental answer for five to fifteen users is the SECURIO P36i.

What warranty applies, and does the cut level affect it?

Yes, it does. HSM publishes a 5-year machine warranty and a lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers for SECURIO models rated P-2 to P-5. This C18 is P-4, so both apply in full. Machines rated P-6 or P-7 fall outside that and carry a 3-year machine warranty with no lifetime roller cover - a real consideration when comparing across security levels.
