HSM SECURIO C18 1/4 inch Strip Cut Document Shredder - HSM1911

The SECURIO C18 in 5.8 mm strip cut is the only machine in HSM's C-series carrying an optical media rating - O-2 alongside P-2 - so it will take CDs and DVDs as well as paper. It is also the fastest, at 17 to 19 sheets a pass on a 360 W motor, roughly double the power of the C16. The cost of that speed is security: a 5.8 mm strip is DIN 66399 P-2 and is not appropriate for regulated paper. The chassis is noticeably more substantial than the C14 and C16, at 21.6 lb and 21.3 inches tall, with a 6.6 gallon pull-out container and a 230 mm throat.

The extra motor is what you are paying for. At 360 W the C18 has roughly twice the power of the C16 chassis, which shows up less in the sheet rating than in how the machine behaves at the top of that rating - it slows less, stalls less and recovers from an overfeed more readily. The 21.6 lb weight reflects that build. Warranty is HSM's full P-2 to P-5 package.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Take this one if your desk produces both a high volume of non-sensitive paper and the occasional disc to destroy. The O-2 rating is genuinely useful - most personal shredders in this price band will not take optical media at all - and 17 to 19 sheets a pass on a 360 W motor makes short work of a stack. What you must not do is use it for confidential records. P-2 is a coarse strip; the discs come out in large pieces too, which is fine for a scratch backup and not fine for a disc holding client data. For confidential paper on the same chassis, the HSM SECURIO C18 3.9 x 30 mm (HSM1913) is P-4 at eight to nine sheets, though it drops the optical media rating entirely. If you need both real security and optical media destruction, that combination only exists further up the range - the HSM SECURIO P36i 1.9 x 15 mm (HSM1852) is P-5 and O-4.
