Description

The SECURIO C14 in 3.9 mm strip cut is the highest-throughput and lowest-security member of the C14 pair: it takes 10 to 12 sheets a pass where the cross-cut C14 takes five or six, but it only reaches DIN 66399 level P-2. Buy it when the job is bulk destruction of routine internal paper at a single desk, not when the paper is regulated. The chassis is a compact 14.4 in wide by 15.9 in tall unit with a 5.3 gallon pull-out container, quiet enough at roughly 55 to 60 dB(A) to sit in a shared room, and it starts and stops on a light barrier so there is no switch to remember.

Running costs are low and predictable: there is no bag to buy, the 160 W motor draws almost nothing in standby, and HSM's 5-year machine warranty and lifetime cutting-roller warranty both apply at this security level.

Key Features

  • Strip cut at 3.9 mm - the widest cut in the C14 range, which is why it clears 10 to 12 sheets a pass instead of five or six
  • 225 mm (8.86 in) throat takes letter and A4 sheets fed portrait without folding
  • Induction-hardened solid steel cutting rollers accept staples and paper clips, so documents go in as they come off the desk
  • Automatic start/stop on a light barrier, with reverse for clearing an overfeed
  • EcoSmart standby draws 0.1 W, so the machine can stay plugged in
  • Safety element across the feed opening prevents accidental contact with the rollers
  • 5.3 gallon (20 l) pull-out container that empties without lifting the cutting head off
  • Covered by HSM's 5-year machine warranty and lifetime cutting-roller warranty, both of which apply to P-2 through P-5 models

What's in the Box

The C14 ships assembled, with the waste container fitted and a power cord. Disposable shredder bags are not included; the C14 collects into its own rigid container, which is emptied directly.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

This is the right C14 for a single user who shreds a steady volume of ordinary paperwork - drafts, duplicate print-outs, internal memos - and values speed over particle size. P-2 leaves 3.9 mm strips that stay readable in places, so it is not appropriate for HIPAA-covered records, financial account data, HR files or anything where a data-protection assessment would be asked for. If that describes your paper, take the HSM SECURIO C14 4 x 25 mm (HSM2253) instead: same chassis, same footprint, P-4, and a real drop to five or six sheets a pass. If you want P-2 speed but a bigger bin and more sheets per pass, the HSM SECURIO C16 5.8 mm (HSM1901) does 15 to 17 sheets into a 6.6 gallon container. And if several people will share the machine, skip the C-series entirely - it is a personal shredder, not a departmental one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it shred staples and paper clips?

Yes. HSM builds the C14 with induction-hardened solid steel cutting rollers and rates the machine for staples and paper clips, so you do not need to strip documents before feeding them. Bulldog clips, binder clips and ring-binder mechanisms are a different matter - those are heavy enough to damage the rollers and should be removed. Large numbers of staples in one folded bundle will also eat into the 10 to 12 sheet capacity, so feed thick stapled sets a few sheets at a time.

How many sheets will it really take?

HSM rates it at 10 to 12 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper. Standard US 20 lb copy paper is slightly lighter at about 75 g/m2, so in practice you can often feed one more sheet than the rating suggests. Glossy, coated or heavily folded paper counts for more than one sheet. The honest planning figure is 10 sheets a pass; feeding to the top of the range repeatedly is what causes jams.

Is P-2 secure enough for confidential documents?

No, not for regulated data. DIN 66399 P-2 allows strips up to 800 mm2, and a 3.9 mm strip keeps whole lines of text intact along its length. It is fine for internal drafts, duplicate print-outs and general office waste. For customer records, medical or financial information, or HR files, use at least P-4, which on this chassis means the HSM SECURIO C14 4 x 25 mm (HSM2253).

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

The throat is 225 mm (8.86 in) wide. US letter fed portrait is 8.5 in wide and fits. US legal is also 8.5 in wide - it is longer, not wider - so it feeds normally as well. Tabloid (11 x 17 in) does not fit portrait and has to be folded once, which then counts as two sheets against the capacity rating.

How often will the bin need emptying?

The container holds 5.3 gallons (20 l). Strip cut is bulky waste - the strips fluff rather than pack - so it fills faster than a cross-cut model with the same bin. A desk-side user shredding a few dozen pages a day will empty it roughly weekly; a heavier user, every couple of days. There is no bag, so emptying means pulling the container out and tipping it.

Is this shredder NSA approved?

No. The NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders only covers high-security machines that produce particles no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm. The C14 is a P-2 strip-cut shredder and is nowhere near that specification, and it does not appear on the list. If you need an NSA-listed machine, HSM's listed models include the SECURIO P36i (L6), which uses a 1 x 5 mm cut.

How loud is it in a shared office?

HSM quotes approximately 55 to 60 dB(A) at idle. That is comparable to normal conversation and quiet enough for an open-plan desk, though the noise rises while paper is actually passing through the rollers. The machine only runs when paper breaks the light barrier, so it is silent between jobs rather than idling.

What warranty comes with it?

HSM publishes a 5-year machine warranty and a lifetime warranty on the solid steel cutting rollers for SECURIO models in security levels P-2 to P-5. This C14 is P-2, so both apply. That warranty position is one of the practical arguments for choosing a P-2 to P-5 machine over a P-6 or P-7 model, which HSM covers for 3 years with no lifetime roller cover.
