Description

The 0.78 x 11 mm SECURIO B34 is the model to look at when P-6 is the requirement and there is real paperwork to get through. Its 8.58 mm2 particle clears both DIN 66399 P-6 thresholds - under 10 mm2 in area and under 1 mm in width - and the machine takes eight sheets of 80 g/m2 paper per pass, the highest of any P-6 or P-7 option across this family. It is also rated for staples and paper clips, which the P-7 machines are not.

Key Features

  • 0.78 x 11 mm particle, genuinely P-6. Widely miscatalogued as P-5. It is not: 8.58 mm2 is under the P-6 area limit and 0.78 mm is under the P-6 width limit. P-5 allows up to 30 mm2, a visibly larger fragment.
  • Eight sheets per pass. The most capable high-security cut in the B32/B34 range. The P-6 B32 manages six and the P-7 models four and five.
  • Staples and paper clips accepted. HSM lists fasteners as shreddable on this cut, so filing-room clear-outs do not require a de-stapling stage.
  • 100-litre pull-out container with fill-level window. Micro-cut waste settles as it accumulates, so being able to check the level through the cabinet door is more useful here than on a strip-cut machine.
  • 700 W motor, 310 mm feed opening. The larger motor of the two used in this family. The throat is the same 310 mm as the B32 - legal and tabloid feed short edge first.
  • Approximately 56 dB(A) at idle, 0.1 W standby. Quiet enough for a records office, with EcoSmart control keeping idle consumption negligible.

What's in the Box

The HSM SECURIO B34 arrives assembled: the cutting head and cabinet are a single unit, with the 100 l (26.4 gal) waste container in place behind the cabinet door, plus the mains lead and the HSM operating manual. There is no oiler on this article — lubrication, where required, is a manual task.

Shredder bags and HSM's fitting cardboard waste box are consumables and are not included — order them with the machine if you do not intend to empty the container loose. This cut requires regular lubrication, and HSM shredder oil is sold separately.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

This suits a legal, medical, HR or financial records function that has committed to P-6 and destroys documents daily rather than occasionally. Eight sheets a pass and staple tolerance make it the least frustrating high-security shredder in the range to actually use, and the 100-litre bin means the job is not constantly interrupted.

Do not buy it if the requirement is written as P-7 or 1 x 5 mm - it will not satisfy that, and the 1 x 5 mm B34 is the machine that will. Do not buy it for coarse bulk paper either; at eight sheets a pass the P-2 strip-cut B34, which handles 30 to 32, is four times faster and far cheaper. Be aware of two genuine trade-offs: HSM's lifetime cutting-roller warranty stops at P-5, so this head is not covered by it, and the machine cannot take CDs or credit cards - HSM rates it F-3 and P-6 only. If either of those matters more than the extra DIN level, the 1.9 x 15 mm P-5 B34 keeps the warranty and takes 13 to 15 sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0.78 x 11 mm P-5 or P-6?

P-6, without ambiguity. The particle area is 8.58 mm2, under the 10 mm2 limit, and the width is 0.78 mm, under the 1 mm limit - DIN 66399 requires both for P-6 and this cut meets both. Resellers frequently list it as P-5. P-5 permits up to 30 mm2, which is the class HSM's 1.9 x 15 mm cut falls into.

Can I shred stapled documents?

Yes. HSM lists staples and paper clips as acceptable for this cut, which is unusual at this security level and a genuine practical advantage over the P-7 machines in the same cabinet. Heavier fasteners - binder clips, spiral bindings, bulldog clips - should still be removed, as they are outside what HSM rates the machine for.

Will it take CDs or credit cards?

No. HSM rates this model F-3 and P-6 only, covering film and paper. There is no optical-media or card-carrier rating for the micro-cut B34, and the fine rollers are not built for rigid plastic. Use a dedicated media destroyer, or a P-2 or P-4 model from the same range, which do carry O and T ratings.

How does it compare with the P-6 SECURIO B32?

Same 0.78 x 11 mm cut and same P-6 rating. The B34 takes eight sheets per pass against the B32's six, uses a 700 W motor rather than 610 W, and holds 100 litres rather than 82. It is also a bigger, heavier cabinet - 541 x 439 x 845 mm and 42 kg. For a busy shared destruction point the B34 is the sensible choice; for one desk, the B32 saves space and money.

Will legal-size paper fit?

Yes. The feed opening is 310 mm, or 12.2 inches. Legal paper is 8.5 inches on the short edge and tabloid is 11 inches, so both enter short edge first. Extra length simply means the sheet takes longer to pass through. Only sheets wider than 12.2 inches at the leading edge need folding, and folding counts double against the eight-sheet capacity.

Does it need regular oiling?

Yes. All micro-cut heads do, and skipping it is the usual reason a high-security shredder starts cutting poorly. HSM does not offer this particular variant with a factory-fitted automatic oiler, so plan on a manual oiling routine using HSM shredder oil and make it somebody's named responsibility.

Is the cutting head covered by the lifetime warranty?

No. HSM's lifetime warranty on the induction-hardened solid steel cutting rollers applies to security levels P-2 through P-5. A P-6 machine falls outside it, so the rollers are covered by the standard machine warranty. That is worth weighing against the 1.9 x 15 mm P-5 version of this cabinet, which retains the lifetime cover. We could not verify the standard US warranty period from HSM's published documentation.
