Description

The SECURIO B34 at 1 x 5 mm is the largest P-7 machine in this family. The particle measures 5 mm2 - the exact limit DIN 66399 sets for P-7, the highest paper level in the standard - and the 100-litre container swallows roughly 1,839 shredded sheets before it needs emptying. Five sheets per pass is the price of that security level, and it is not negotiable: no motor makes a 1 x 5 mm cut fast.

Key Features

  • 1 x 5 mm particle at DIN 66399 P-7. The top paper security level. The standard defines nothing above P-7, so treat any higher number you see quoted as a cataloguing error.
  • 100-litre pull-out container. Rated by HSM at approximately 1,839 shredded sheets - by a wide margin the largest sheet count in the B32/B34 range, because P-7 particles pack with almost no trapped air.
  • 700 W motor. The larger of the two motors used across this family, which is what allows five sheets a pass rather than the four the B32 manages at the same cut.
  • Paper only. HSM lists F-3 and P-7 for this model - film and paper. No cards, no discs, and staples and clips should be removed before feeding.
  • Light barrier and EcoSmart control. Automatic start and stop on paper entry, 0.1 W standby draw, and approximately 56 dB(A) at idle.
  • Also sold with a factory-fitted automatic oiler. Article 1844113O. Worth considering seriously, because a P-7 cutting head is the least forgiving of missed lubrication.

What's in the Box

The HSM SECURIO B34 arrives assembled: the cutting head and cabinet are a single unit, with the 100 l (26.4 gal) waste container in place behind the cabinet door, plus the mains lead and the HSM operating manual. There is no oiler on this article — lubrication, where required, is a manual task.

Shredder bags and HSM's fitting cardboard waste box are consumables and are not included — order them with the machine if you do not intend to empty the container loose. This cut requires regular lubrication, and HSM shredder oil is sold separately.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this where a policy, contract or classification procedure names P-7 or a 1 x 5 mm residue and the destruction point handles more than a trickle of paper. The 100-litre bin is the real argument for the B34 over the B32 at this security level: at P-7 you will be feeding slowly, and having to stop and empty a bin makes that worse.

Do not buy it as a general shredder. Five sheets a pass, paper only, no staples - it is a specialist instrument, and using it for routine office paper wastes both the machine and your staff's time. If your requirement is high but not classified, the 0.78 x 11 mm B34 gives P-6 at eight sheets a pass and is rated for staples, or the 1.9 x 15 mm version gives P-5 at 13 to 15 sheets and keeps HSM's lifetime cutting-roller warranty, which P-7 machines do not have. Finally, do not read P-7 as NSA approval - we have not verified an NSA Evaluated Products List entry for this model, and the two are separate qualifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this machine NSA approved?

We cannot confirm that it is. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 requires a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm residue and a current entry on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This machine produces a 1 x 5 mm particle, so it meets the size requirement, but the EPL listing is a separate matter and we have not verified one. If you are destroying classified material, check the current EPL directly - a P-7 rating on its own is not NSA approval.

Why only five sheets per pass?

Because cutting a sheet into 1 x 5 mm fragments takes vastly more work than cutting it into strips. The 700 W motor is the larger of the two used in this family and five sheets of 80 g/m2 paper is what it drives through a P-7 head reliably. Overfeeding will trigger the reverse cycle and, done repeatedly, shortens the life of an expensive cutting head.

Can I leave staples in?

No. HSM lists paper as the only shreddable material for this model. A P-7 head has extremely tight clearances and metal fasteners are a genuine risk to it. Remove staples and clips first. If de-stapling is not workable for your volume, the 0.78 x 11 mm B34 is rated for staples and paper clips and gives you P-6 at eight sheets a pass.

How long before the bin is full?

HSM rates the 100-litre container at roughly 1,839 shredded sheets at this cut, the highest figure anywhere in this family. Because feeding is slow at five sheets a pass, most sites find they empty this machine far less often than a strip-cut shredder despite the higher security level.

How does it compare with the P-7 SECURIO B32?

Same 1 x 5 mm cut and same P-7 rating. The B34 has a 700 W motor instead of 610 W, five sheets per pass instead of four, a 100-litre bin instead of 82, and a larger, heavier cabinet at 541 x 439 x 845 mm and 42 kg. If the P-7 destruction point is shared or busy, the B34 is the better buy; for a single desk, the B32 does the same job in less space.

Does it need oiling, and is there an oiler version?

It needs oiling more than any other cut in the range - fine particle heads run hot and dry out quickly. HSM sells the identical machine with an external automatic oiler fitted as article 1844113O. If lubrication will depend on someone remembering, buy that version instead.

Is the cutting head covered by the lifetime warranty?

No. HSM's lifetime warranty on the induction-hardened cutting rollers covers security levels P-2 through P-5, so a P-7 machine falls outside it and the rollers are covered by the standard machine warranty instead. This is a real cost consideration at this level. We were unable to verify the standard US warranty term from HSM's published documentation.
