Frequently Asked Questions
What does the automatic oiler actually do?
It meters shredder oil onto the cutting rollers automatically as the machine runs, rather than requiring an operator to spray oil across the feed opening every few bins. Cross-cut heads generate more friction than strip cut and lose cutting performance as they dry out. The oiler is a consumable-fed device: the oil bottle empties and has to be replaced, so budget for refills.
Is an oil bottle included with the machine?
We could not confirm from HSM's published documentation whether a filled bottle ships with the unit. Assume it does not and add HSM shredder oil to your order - it is inexpensive and you will need refills regardless. Use HSM's own oil rather than a general lubricant; the wrong oil can gum the rollers.
How much wider is this than the standard B32?
The oiler is mounted on the side of the cabinet and takes the overall width from 497 mm to 547 mm - about two extra inches. Depth (398 mm) and height (793 mm) are unchanged. If the shredder lives in a fitted alcove or under a worktop, measure before ordering.
Is P-4 enough for HIPAA or GDPR?
Neither regulation names a DIN level. Both require that destruction make reconstruction impracticable, and P-4 is the level most organisations and their auditors settle on for ordinary personal data. For special-category data - medical records, financial account details, anything where a breach would be severe - P-5 is the more defensible choice, and your own policy should be the deciding document.
Can it shred CDs and credit cards?
Yes. HSM rates this model O-3 for optical media and T-4 for data carriers. Feed discs and cards individually rather than mixed into a stack of paper, and expect the particles to be coarser than the paper output - the rating for optical media is a separate scale from the paper rating.
How often will the bin need emptying?
HSM rates the 82-litre container at about 1,002 sheets of 4.5 x 30 mm waste. A department shredding a few hundred sheets a week will empty it every week or two. Cross-cut waste settles as it accumulates, so the inspection window in the door is a better guide than the calendar.
Does the lifetime roller warranty cover this model?
Yes. HSM's lifetime warranty on the induction-hardened cutting rollers applies to security levels P-2 through P-5, and this is a P-4 machine. Note that it covers the rollers, not the oiler, motor or electronics. We were unable to verify the general US machine warranty term from HSM's published material.
