Description

Take the standard P-4 SECURIO B26 — 4.5 x 30 mm cross cut, 14-16 sheets a pass, 12.2-inch throat, 55-litre bin — and bolt HSM’s external automatic oiler to the side of it. That is this article, and the reason it exists is entirely practical: shared shredders do not get oiled, and unoiled cross-cut heads quietly lose sheet capacity until someone declares the machine worn out.

It is the best-selling configuration argument in the range. P-4 is where most offices need to be, and the oiler is what keeps a P-4 machine performing like the datasheet three years in.

Key Features

  • External automatic oiler — lubricates the cutting cylinders continuously during operation, so throughput does not depend on anyone remembering a maintenance task.
  • P-4 cross cut at 4.5 x 30 mm — 135 mm² particles, comfortably inside the 160 mm² DIN 66399 P-4 limit.
  • 14-16 sheets per pass — at 80 g/m²; 17-19 sheets on lighter 70 g/m² paper.
  • Broad materials list — paper with staples and clips, credit cards, and CDs or DVDs — rated E-3, F-1, O-3 and T-4 alongside P-4.
  • About 672 sheets per 55-litre bin — front pull-out container on castors.
  • Lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty — HSM covers its induction-hardened cylinders for life at P-2 to P-5, which includes this model.
  • 0.1 W EcoSmart standby — the machine can stay switched on at the wall.

HSM publishes two widths for oiler-equipped B26 machines depending on which document you read — 547 mm in the series data, 497 mm on the per-article sheet. Allow the larger figure when planning a location.

What’s in the Box

  • SECURIO B26 shredder on castors with 55 L pull-out bin
  • External automatic oiler module, fitted
  • Power cord and operating instructions

Bags and oil are separate orders: HSM1815 bags (34 gal, roll of 100, MPN 3310000004) and HSM cutting-block oil for the oiler bottle.

On sheet capacity: the 14-16 figure is HSM’s at 80 g/m², and 17-19 at 70 g/m². US 20 lb bond lies between them. A well-lubricated head holds the upper end of that range for years, which is the entire argument for this version over the standard one.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Specify this version when the shredder is departmental property rather than one person’s, when facilities staff cover several buildings, or whenever past experience says the oil bottle in the cupboard will stay full. The premium over the standard P-4 B26 is small next to the cost of a cutting unit that has been run dry.

If one person owns the machine and will oil it monthly, the standard 4.5 x 30 mm B26 does the same job for less. If your policy has moved to P-5, this cut does not reach it — the 1.9 x 15 mm B26 is available with the same oiler. And if the 55-litre bin is the binding constraint rather than maintenance, the SECURIO B32 gives you 82 litres on the same 310 mm throat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the automatic oiler actually do?

It holds a bottle of HSM cutting-block oil on the side of the cabinet and meters lubricant onto the cutting cylinders while the machine runs. Cross-cut heads shed paper dust into the cutting zone; oil carries it away and keeps friction down. A neglected P-4 head typically shows up as creeping loss of sheet capacity long before it jams, which is why the problem is usually noticed late.

Do I still need to buy oil?

Yes. The oiler automates application, not supply. Order HSM cutting-block oil with the machine and keep a spare bottle. Do not substitute vegetable oil, thin general-purpose machine oil or aerosol lubricant — the first gums, the second runs off, and the third has no place near a shredder motor. Consumption tracks paper volume rather than time.

Can it shred CDs, DVDs and credit cards?

Yes. HSM rates this cutting head O-3 for optical media and T-4 for magnetic carriers, and lists credit cards and CDs/DVDs as accepted materials alongside paper, staples and paper clips. Feed discs and cards individually. USB sticks and hard drives are not on the list and should go to a dedicated media destroyer.

How much room does the oiler need?

Plan for about two extra inches of width. HSM’s B26 series data quotes 547 mm for oiler-equipped machines against 497 mm standard, though the per-article datasheet still prints the standard cabinet. Depth and height are unchanged at 397 x 676 mm. Measure before you commit the machine to a fitted alcove or a gap between cabinets.

Is this NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 demands a 1 mm x 5 mm maximum particle and a listing on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This machine cuts 4.5 x 30 mm and is not listed. P-4 is appropriate for confidential commercial documents under DIN 66399 and satisfies most privacy programmes; it has no bearing on classified material.

How often will the bin need emptying?

HSM rates the 55-litre container at roughly 672 sheets of 80 g/m² paper at this cut size. For a department of eight to ten that is usually a weekly job. The bin pulls out from the front, so emptying does not involve lifting the cutting unit off the cabinet.
