Description

The HSM SECURIO B24 with external automatic oiler is the compact end of HSM’s B-series: a 9.4-inch throat, a 9.2-gallon bin and a P-4 cross cut, with an oiler bottle mounted on the side that keeps the cutting cylinders lubricated without anyone remembering to do it. That last point is the whole reason this version exists. A P-4 cutting head loses sheet capacity fast when it runs dry, and in a shared office nobody owns the oil bottle.

Against its siblings, the B24 is the small-footprint choice. It takes the same 610 W motor as the much larger B26 and B32 but pairs it with a 240 mm intake and a 35-litre bin, so it fits beside a desk or in a copy alcove where the wider cabinets will not. You give up bin capacity, not shredding performance.

Key Features

  • External automatic oiler — an oil bottle mounted on the machine feeds the cutting cylinders continuously, so throughput does not drift downward between manual oiling intervals.
  • P-4 cross cut at 4.5 x 30 mm — each sheet becomes roughly 135 mm² particles — the standard for ordinary confidential business paper under DIN 66399.
  • 14-16 sheets per pass — quoted by HSM at 80 g/m²; on 70 g/m² stock the same machine is rated 17-19 sheets.
  • Solid steel cutting cylinders — induction-hardened and covered by HSM’s lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty, which applies to security levels P-2 through P-5.
  • EcoSmart standby — HSM rates standby draw at 0.1 W, so the machine can be left switched on at the wall without measurable cost.
  • Quiet enough for an open office — approximately 54 dB(A) at idle — the quietest chassis in this batch.
  • Handles staples and paper clips — no need to pre-strip documents; credit cards and CDs/DVDs are also on HSM’s accepted-materials list for this cutting head.

HSM assigns this cutting head an E-3 electronic-media class, but the materials HSM actually lists for the B24 are paper, staples, paper clips, credit cards and optical discs. Do not feed USB sticks, memory cards or hard drives into it — those need a purpose-built media destroyer.

What’s in the Box

  • SECURIO B24 shredder on castors with 35 L pull-out bin
  • External automatic oiler module, fitted
  • Power cord and operating instructions

Shredder bags are not included. The B24 takes HSM1408 bags (13 gal, 100 per carton), which also fit the Classic 108, AF150 and AF300. Replacement oil for the oiler bottle is also ordered separately.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this if you need P-4 destruction next to a workstation rather than in a central print room, and if the office has a history of shredders slowing down because nobody oils them. Up to about five people can share a B24 in continuous operation. The oiler pays for itself in a department where the machine is everyone’s and no one’s.

Do not buy it if the bin size matters more than the footprint. At roughly 415 sheets the 35 L bin will need emptying two or three times a week in a busy team — the SECURIO B26 at 4.5 x 30 mm holds about 672 sheets in a 55 L bin for a modest price step, and the B32 holds more still. If your retention policy calls for P-5 or finer, this cutting head does not reach it; look at the B24 or B26 at 1.9 x 15 mm instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this shred staples and paper clips?

Yes. HSM lists staples and paper clips as accepted materials for the B24 at 4.5 x 30 mm, so you can feed stapled documents straight in without stripping them first. Heavy binder clips, spiral bindings and ring-binder mechanisms are a different matter — remove those. Repeatedly feeding metal fasteners is normal use, but it is also the reason the automatic oiler on this version is worth having: well-lubricated cylinders shrug off fasteners that a dry cutting head will drag on.

How is this different from the B24 without the oiler?

Mechanically, nothing. Same 610 W motor, same 240 mm throat, same 35 L bin, same 4.5 x 30 mm cut. The oiler version carries an oil bottle on the side of the cabinet that meters lubricant onto the cutting cylinders automatically. In practice that means sheet capacity stays at the rated 14-16 rather than sagging between manual oiling sessions, and nobody has to remember a maintenance task. Allow a little extra side clearance for the bottle.

How often will the bin need emptying?

HSM rates the 35 L bin at roughly 415 sheets of 80 g/m² paper at this cut size. A single user clearing a few files a day might empty it weekly; a five-person team running it in continuous operation will be at it two or three times a week. If that sounds like too much handling, the B26 chassis (55 L, about 672 sheets at the same cut size) or the B32 (82 L) is the better buy.

Is this NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 mm x 5 mm and the specific model must appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This machine cuts 4.5 x 30 mm, which is an order of magnitude coarser, and it is not listed. P-4 is the right level for ordinary confidential commercial paper under DIN 66399, not for classified national-security material. If you have an NSA requirement, ask us before ordering — nothing in the B24 range meets it.

What bags fit this model?

HSM1408 shredder bags, sold 100 to a carton, rated 13 gallons. The same bag fits the HSM Classic 108, AF150 and AF300, so a mixed HSM fleet can standardise on one part. The larger HSM1815 bag used by the B26 and B32 will not sit correctly in the B24’s 35 L bin. Bags are not supplied with the machine.

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

Legal, yes — fed short edge first, an 8.5-inch width passes easily through the 9.4-inch throat, and the extra length is irrelevant to a shredder. Tabloid at 11 x 17 inches will not fit flat; fold it or feed it folded in half. If you routinely destroy 11 x 17 drawings or ledger sheets, move up to the 310 mm throat on the B26 or B32.

Does the oiler need special oil?

Use HSM cutting-block oil. Do not substitute vegetable oil, aerosol lubricants or general-purpose machine oil: aerosols are a fire risk near a shredder motor, and thicker oils gum the cylinders and attract dust. Replacement bottles are ordered separately from the machine. The oiler meters continuously in use, so consumption tracks how much paper you actually shred rather than the calendar.
