Description

The SECURIO B24 in 3.9 mm strip cut is the volume workhorse of HSM's compact B-series: it takes 19 to 21 sheets in a single pass, more than any other B24 configuration, because it is also the least secure one. This is a machine for departments that generate a lot of routine internal paper — drafts, printouts, meeting packs, superseded procedures — and need it gone quickly and quietly rather than reduced to confetti.

Strip cut means the paper is sliced into 3.9 mm ribbons the full length of the sheet. Under DIN 66399 that is security level P-2. It is appropriate for internal documents whose disclosure would be inconvenient rather than damaging. It is not the right level for personal data, medical records, payroll or anything covered by a data protection obligation; for those, the 4.5 x 30 mm (P-4) or 1.9 x 15 mm (P-5) versions of the same cabinet are the correct choice, and they cost only a little more.

Key Features

  • 19–21 sheets per pass at 80 g/m² (22–24 sheets on lighter 70 g/m² stock). In practice a 20-sheet stapled report goes in whole.
  • Induction-hardened solid steel cutting rollers that pass staples and paper clips without a separate removal step, and carry a lifetime warranty at this security level.
  • 9.45 in (240 mm) feed throat — letter and legal sheets feed short-edge first with room to spare. Tabloid will not fit; step up to the B32 or B35 for that.
  • 9.2 gallon (35 L) pull-out container holding roughly 306 shredded sheets before it needs emptying, with an inspection window so you can see the level without opening the cabinet.
  • Automatic light-barrier start/stop. The rollers only turn when paper is present, which is why the idle figure of about 54 dB(A) matters less than it looks.
  • EcoSmart standby draws 0.1 W, so the machine can be left switched on at the wall without a meaningful energy penalty.
  • Blue Angel certified for durability, low energy use and recyclable material content.
  • Castors fitted as standard, so a 35 lb cabinet can be rolled between offices by one person.
  • Overload-protected feed that backs the rollers out when too much paper is pushed in, rather than stalling and requiring disassembly.

What's in the Box

  • SECURIO B24 shredder with cutting head and cabinet assembled, castors fitted
  • Removable 9.2 gallon waste container
  • Operating instructions

Waste bags are not included. The correct consumable is the HSM 13 gallon tear-resistant shredder bag (part 3310000014), which also fits the Classic 108, AF150 and AF300.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy it if your shredding is high-volume and low-sensitivity: a print room, a project office, a school administration area, a warehouse that disposes of picking lists and packing notes. The throughput per pass is the best in the B24 range and the price is the lowest, so cost per shredded sheet is excellent.

Do not buy it if you are shredding anything that identifies a person. P-2 strips are 3.9 mm wide and run the full length of the page; a determined reconstruction of a strip-cut document is a known, documented possibility. Auditors and data protection officers routinely specify P-4 as the floor for personal data and P-5 for confidential personal data. Also skip it if you need to destroy CDs or credit cards regularly — the rollers accept them, but a strip-cut result on optical media is a low-security outcome. Finally, if more than about six people will share the machine all day, look at the B32 instead: the B24's 9.2 gallon bin will become the bottleneck long before the motor does.

Frequently Asked Questions

What DIN security level is the SECURIO B24 3.9 mm, and is that enough for personal data?

It is P-2 under DIN 66399 / ISO IEC 21964, with additional ratings of O-2, T-2 and E-2 for optical media, film and electronic media. P-2 allows a particle area of up to 800 mm2, and 3.9 mm full-length strips fall inside that. For personal data most data protection guidance and internal audit standards specify P-4 as a minimum and P-5 for sensitive personal data, so this configuration is not the right choice for HR, medical or financial records. HSM builds the same cabinet in 4.5 x 30 mm (P-4) and 1.9 x 15 mm (P-5).

Can it shred staples and paper clips?

Yes. The cutting rollers are induction-hardened solid steel and HSM rates this model for paper, staples and paper clips, so stapled reports and clipped bundles go in as they are. That is the main labour saving over a cheaper consumer shredder. Large binder clips, ring binder mechanisms and bulldog clips are not covered by that rating and should be removed.

How many sheets can it really take at once?

HSM rates it at 19 to 21 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper, and 22 to 24 sheets of lighter 70 g/m2 stock. US 20 lb bond is about 75 g/m2, so a realistic working figure is around 20 to 22 sheets. Feeding to the rated maximum every time shortens roller life; most facilities settle on feeding about three quarters of the rating and let the automatic feed handle the rest.

Will legal-size or tabloid paper fit?

Legal yes, tabloid no. The feed throat is 9.45 in (240 mm) wide. Letter and legal sheets are both 8.5 in across the short edge, so they feed with roughly an inch of clearance. Tabloid (11 x 17 in) is 11 in across and will not enter without folding. If you shred plan sets or 11 x 17 reports regularly, the SECURIO B32 at 12.2 in or the B35 at 15.75 in is the correct machine.

How often will the 9.2 gallon bin need emptying?

HSM measures the container at roughly 306 shredded sheets for this cut. Strip cut does not compact well, so that number is lower than you might expect from a 35 litre bin. A single heavy user will empty it about once a day; a shared machine on a busy floor will need emptying two or three times a day. If that sounds like a chore, the B32 holds around 1,000 sheets in the same cut class.

What bags fit this model?

HSM 13 gallon tear-resistant shredder bags, part number 3310000014, sold on a 100 count roll. The same bag fits the HSM Classic 108 and the SECURIO AF150 and AF300. Bags are not supplied with the machine. You can also run the shredder without a bag and tip the rigid container directly into a recycling stream, which is what the removable container and inspection window are designed for.

Is this shredder NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 requires a particle no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm and, separately, listing on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This machine cuts 3.9 mm full-length strips, which is far outside that specification, and it is not on the EPL. If you have a classified destruction requirement, you need a machine specifically listed on the current NSA/CSS EPL for paper; a high DIN level on its own does not satisfy the requirement.

How loud is it in an open-plan office?

HSM publishes approximately 54 dB(A) at idle for the B24. That is quiet, but idle is not the number you hear during a shred; expect noticeably more under load, as with any shredder. Because the light barrier only spins the rollers when paper is present, the machine is silent between jobs. HSM does not publish a figure for noise under load for this model, so we are not going to quote one.
