The HSM SECURIO AF500 1/16 x 5/8 (model 2102) is a floor-standing P-5 autofeed shredder that cuts paper into 1.9 x 15 mm particles from a lockable 500-sheet tray. It pairs that tray with a 21.7-gallon (82 l) collection bin, so large loads can run for a long time between emptyings. The AF500 pairs a 500-sheet magazine with a container more than twice that size, and fine P-5 particles settle densely, so one person can load a stack, lock the lid and leave it for a long run before anyone needs to empty it. The locking magazine also matters for security: confidential papers waiting their turn are closed inside the machine instead of sitting in an open hopper. While a stack is running, the 9.45 in (240 mm) manual slot remains free for a document that cannot wait.

What P-5 means for this machine's paperwork

DIN 66399 allows a P-5 particle up to 30 mm², and the AF500's 1.9 x 15 mm cut comes in just under that at 28.5 mm². Compared with the 135 mm² chips from the P-4 AF500, that is a far smaller fragment, the level many data-protection policies name for personnel files and financial records. The T-5 rating covers magnetic-stripe cards, fed singly through the manual slot. This head carries no optical media rating, so discs should not go in.

Consumables and maintenance

The container is lined with HSM's cardboard box insert for the AF500/B32, which is ordered separately. HSM cutting-block oil is also an extra, and a P-5 head keeps its rated capacity much better when it is oiled regularly, for example at each emptying. The solid steel rollers accept staples and paper clips.

• AF500 3/16 x 1 1/8 (P-4): 14-16 sheets per pass and the only AF500 rated for CDs and DVDs.
• AF500 1/32 x 7/16 (P-6): for policies that name P-6, at 6 sheets per pass, paper only.
• AF300 or AF350 1/16 x 5/8: the same P-5 particle in a smaller cabinet with a 9.2-gallon (35 l) bin and a 300- or 350-sheet tray.
• SECURIO B24 at P-5: the same 1.9 x 15 mm result in a hand-fed deskside machine with a 9.2-gallon bin.

Who should buy the AF500 P-5

It suits a department with real volume and a P-5 requirement that wants shredding to happen without someone standing at the machine. If you also destroy discs, take the P-4 version; if a contract demands P-6, take the 1/32 x 7/16 model; and if volumes are modest, an AF300 saves money and floor space.
