Description

This is the workhorse of the AF300 line: a P-4 cross-cut head fed by a 300-sheet automatic tray, taking 12 to 14 sheets at a time through the manual slot. It is the fastest AF300 by a clear margin, and it is the only one on this chassis rated for optical media - HSM lists it at O-3 for CDs and DVDs alongside credit cards, where the P-5 and P-6 versions handle paper only. For an office whose destruction policy stops at P-4, this is the version to buy.

What's in the Box

The shredder ships assembled on its cabinet with the 9.2-gallon pull-out bin, power cord and operating instructions. Shredder bags are not included. HSM lists part 1661995050 (530 x 340 x 1000 mm, 100 bags per pack) for this chassis; the same bag also fits the SECURIO B22 and B24. Shredder oil is a separate consumable.

Day-to-Day Operation

The routine is simple enough that it does not need explaining twice: fan the stack, drop up to 300 sheets in the tray, close the lid. The machine separates and feeds sheets itself and stops when the tray is empty. Keep the paper to one size, take out plastic wallets and ring binders, and put thickly stapled bundles through the manual slot rather than the tray - the sheet separator is the part that objects to a heavy staple, not the cutting head.

Consumables are a bag and a bottle of oil. HSM bag 1661995050 comes in 100-packs and fits this cabinet along with the B22, B24, AF150 and AF350. Oiling is manual and should be done every few bin changes; at P-4 the dust load is lower than on the micro-cut versions, so the interval is forgiving. The 610 W motor runs from any standard office outlet.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it as the general-purpose shredder for a small office or a busy department that also needs to destroy the occasional disc or expired access card. Twelve to fourteen sheets by hand means you are not queueing for routine jobs, and the 300-sheet tray absorbs the periodic clear-out. Of everything on this chassis, this configuration gives the most shredding per dollar.

Do not buy it if a policy names P-5 or P-6. P-4 particles are 4.5 x 30 mm and, while that satisfies most general confidentiality requirements, organisations holding regulated personal data increasingly specify P-5. In that case take the SECURIO AF300 1/16" x 5/8" and accept 8-10 sheets a pass, or the SECURIO AF300 1/32" x 7/16" for P-6. If your volume is lower and batches are small, the SECURIO AF150 uses the same bin and cabinet with a 150-sheet tray for less money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this model shred CDs and DVDs?

Yes. This is the only AF300 configuration HSM rates for optical media, at destruction class O-3, and it also handles credit cards at T-4. Feed discs and cards one at a time through the manual slot, not buried in a paper stack, and expect the machine to be louder while it works through them. The P-5 and P-6 versions of the AF300 have no O rating and should not be used for discs.

Is P-4 sufficient for GDPR or HIPAA-style personal data?

It depends on your own policy, and you should check it rather than assume. P-4 caps particles at 160 mm2 and is widely accepted for routine personal data such as invoices, correspondence and general staff records. Many organisations handling health, financial or special-category data specify P-5 instead. Neither regulation names a DIN class directly - the class comes from your internal destruction policy, so read that first.

How many sheets can it take at once?

Twelve to fourteen sheets of 80 g/m2 paper through the manual slot, which is the highest manual capacity of any AF300 configuration, and up to 300 sheets loaded into the automatic tray. HSM measures the manual figure at 80 g/m2, roughly equivalent to 20 lb bond. Note that some HSM brochures quote capacities at 70 g/m2, which produces figures around 15% higher and is not what most US offices actually use.

How often will the bin need emptying?

HSM rates the 35-litre bin at approximately 415 sheets of P-4 waste, so a full 300-sheet tray takes it to about three-quarters full. In an office of five to ten people shredding daily, expect to change the bag once or twice a week. The bin pulls straight out of the cabinet; HSM lists bag part 1661995050, a 100-pack that also fits the SECURIO B22, B24, AF150 and AF350.

Will it shred stapled and clipped documents?

Yes. The cutting rollers are solid steel and induction hardened, and HSM rates the machine for paper containing staples and paper clips, so files can go in as they come. Through the automatic tray, avoid thick stapled bundles - a heavy staple can bind the sheet separator - and use the manual slot for those. Remove ring binders, bulldog clips, plastic wallets and laminated pages.

Is this shredder NSA approved?

No. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 requires a 1 mm x 5 mm maximum particle size and requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This is a P-4 machine cutting 4.5 x 30 mm and it is not listed. It is not suitable for classified material under any circumstances. NSA-listed destruction requires a P-7 machine named on the current EPL.

What is the difference between this and the AF350 at the same cut size?

The AF350 uses a 350-sheet tray instead of 300 and stands in a taller, deeper cabinet at 435 x 837 mm rather than 381 x 740 mm. Cut size, manual capacity of 12-14 sheets, motor, throat width, noise and - importantly - the 35-litre bin are identical. You are buying 50 extra tray sheets and a larger footprint, not more bin capacity.
