What does P-5 actually mean in particle size?
DIN 66399 P-5 allows a maximum particle area of 30 mm2. This machine cuts 1.9 x 15 mm, which works out at 28.5 mm2, so it sits just inside the class. In practice that is a chip roughly the size of a grain of rice. It is the level most organisations specify when they hold personal data under a formal privacy policy, and it is a genuine step up from the 4.5 x 30 mm P-4 head fitted to the cheaper Pure 940.
Why does it only take 19-21 sheets when the strip-cut version takes 51?
Smaller particles mean more cuts per sheet and far more work for the motor. The 1.9 x 15 mm head has to make roughly ten times as many cuts as the 5.8 mm strip head for the same page, so the same 1,920 W drive moves fewer sheets. This is not a limitation of this model specifically; it is the standard trade between DIN class and throughput across every shredder range.
How often will the bin need emptying?
HSM rates the 165-litre cabinet at about 2,090 sheets of P-5 waste. Particle-cut chips settle much more densely than strips, so this configuration actually holds more sheets than the strip-cut Pure 940 in the same cabinet. A department putting through a ream a day should expect to empty it roughly weekly. The cabinet rolls out on castors, so emptying does not involve lifting the machine.
Is this shredder NSA approved?
No. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 requires a 1 mm x 5 mm maximum particle and requires the exact model to be listed on the NSA Evaluated Products List. A P-5 rating is not the same thing and does not qualify. This machine is not on the EPL. If you are destroying classified US government material you need a listed P-7 device, and no configuration of the Pure 940 meets that requirement.
Can it shred CDs, DVDs and credit cards?
Yes. HSM rates this configuration at O-4 for optical media and T-5 for data carriers, alongside credit cards. Feed discs and cards individually rather than burying them in a paper stack, and expect the machine to be noticeably louder while it processes them. Optical media at O-4 is a high destruction class, which is one of the practical advantages of this cutting head over the P-4 version.
Can it run continuously through a large file purge?
It is built for sustained departmental use rather than short bursts, with a continuous-duty drive and automatic start/stop. In real use the limit is usually the bin rather than the motor: at 19-21 sheets a pass you will reach 2,090 sheets of waste well before heat becomes an issue. If you are clearing an entire archive room, plan around bin changes and keep a supply of bags on hand.
Does it need oiling?
Particle-cut heads at P-5 accumulate paper dust in the cutting rollers and run better with periodic oiling; HSM sells a shredder oil for this purpose. The machine does not include an automatic oiler, so this is a manual maintenance task. Oil across the full width of the throat with the machine running in reverse, then run a few sheets through. Never use aerosol lubricants or vegetable oil, which gum the rollers.
