What does the extra 90 mm of throat width buy me over the Pure 630?
Two things. Wide media fits: ledger (279 mm) and A3 (297 mm) go in unfolded, which the 310 mm Pure 630 also manages, but folded plans and continuous stationery up to 400 mm only fit here. And shared machines feed faster, because users can drop a rough handful in rather than aligning it. If neither applies, the 630 saves you money for the same security.
Is 21 sheets a low figure for a machine this size?
It is normal for a P-4 particle cut. Cutting a page into 135 mm2 fragments takes far more work per sheet than cutting it into strips, which is why the strip-cut Pure 740 manages 35 to 37 on the same motor. If a higher sheet count matters more to you than the security class, the strip-cut version exists - but it is P-2, and that is a genuine downgrade rather than a variation.
How long before the bin needs emptying?
About 1,860 shredded sheets, which is HSM's published collection figure for the 145 litre bin with this cutting head. A department destroying 400 pages a day gets roughly a working week from one bin. The machine stops automatically when the bin is full, so the failure mode is a stopped shredder rather than an overflow. If weekly bin changes are still too frequent for you, the Pure 740 max holds 240 litres and about 2,950 sheets.
Does it shred CDs, DVDs and credit cards?
Yes. The classification is O-3 for optical media and T-4 for magnetic carriers, alongside F-1 for film and P-4 for paper. Feed discs and cards singly. If you routinely destroy large batches of optical media, expect faster roller wear than paper-only use and consider a dedicated media destroyer for that stream.
Is this NSA approved for classified material?
No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a particle no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm and requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. A 4.5 x 30 mm P-4 particle is far larger than that threshold. This is a commercial-confidentiality machine, not a classified-destruction machine.
How much oil does a particle-cut head actually need?
HSM's guidance for particle-cut Pure machines is lubrication at each bin change under normal use. That is more attention than a strip-cut machine needs, and it is the reason the oiler version of this model exists. Skipping it does not break the machine immediately; it erodes sheet capacity over months until the shredder feels tired.
What happens if someone feeds a stack that is too thick?
The feed has overload protection: the rollers stop and reverse, returning the wad rather than stalling against it. You pull the paper out, split the stack and carry on. It is a nuisance rather than a fault, and it is far better than the alternative on cheaper machines, which is a stalled head that has to be cleared by hand. Twenty-one to twenty-two sheets is the tested figure, so keep handfuls around that size.
