HSM Pure 220 Strip Cut Shredder for General Shredding

Twelve to fourteen sheets a pass into a 25 litre bin, at DIN 66399 P-2: the HSM Pure 220 strip-cut is the highest-throughput machine in the compact half of the Pure range, and the one to choose when the job is getting rid of paper rather than protecting what is printed on it.

It is worth correcting a number that has circulated on this product for years. The sheet capacity is 12 to 14, not 14 or higher, and it is quoted by HSM at 80 g/m². The strip width is 3.9 mm - about 5/32 inch, not the 1/8 inch often quoted. Both figures come from HSM's datasheet for article 2320111, the European sibling of this US model, and both are what you should plan against.

Specifications

Sheet capacity is HSM's own figure at 80 g/m². Standard US 20 lb copier paper is about 75 g/m², slightly lighter, so the published figure is a conservative one for a typical American office. Any shredder quoted against lighter paper will look better on paper than it performs.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy it for a reception, a stockroom, a home office or a small practice that produces a genuine volume of non-confidential paper: mailers, packing slips, superseded price lists, meeting handouts, envelopes. Fourteen sheets at a time is enough to clear a day's tray in a couple of minutes, and P-2 is a perfectly reasonable level for material nobody would care to read.

Do not use it for personal data. Whole lines of text survive a 3.9 mm strip, and if your organisation has a written destruction policy it almost certainly specifies P-4 or higher for anything identifiable. The HSM Pure 220 cross-cut is the same machine in 4 x 25 mm P-4 at 6-7 sheets; the HSM Pure 320 strip-cut is the next step up in raw throughput at 17-19 sheets if speed rather than security is what you are buying. Do not expect it to shred CDs - there is no O class here - and do not treat it as a departmental machine; HSM publishes no duty cycle for it and it is specified as a personal shredder.
