The HSM Powerline SP 5088 with the 7/16 x 1 9/16-3 in (10.5 x 40-76 mm) head is the throughput-first version of HSM's largest Powerline shredder-baler: DIN 66399 P-2, 510-550 sheets per pass, and an 85 kN KP 88.1 press that makes bales of up to 198 lb (90 kg). It suits archive clearances, print operations and warehouses that destroy non-personal paper in bulk, often still in its folders, and send it out as heavy bales.

Speed from a coarse cut

Sheet capacity on these machines is governed mainly by the cut geometry. The same 11.5 kW chassis that manages 180-200 sheets with a 3.9 x 40 mm head reaches 510-550 with this 10.5 mm head, because it does far less cutting per sheet. At that rate no one could hand-feed it; the belt is what makes the throughput usable. HSM's materials list for this variant adds folders to paper, computer listings, crumpled paper, staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and DVDs, floppy disks and USB sticks, so boxed archive can go in without being stripped first.

Know what P-2 means before ordering

P-2 allows particles up to 800 mm², and at its largest this cut reaches 798 mm², so it sits at the very top of the band. It is a level for internal paper without personal data: obsolete stock, packaging and picking paperwork, old manuals, archive past retention. For anything with names, account numbers or health details on it, a P-4 head is the minimum most policies accept.

Bales, consumables and the HSM data

The KP 88.1 forms bales 500 x 500 mm in section and 400-950 mm long. Coarse shred is bulky, so bales on this variant often reach full length before the 90 kg maximum. The machine uses strapping tape, cutting oil and waste bags; all are purchased separately, as are freight, rigging and the three-phase hookup. HSM's current online overview no longer lists the 10.5 mm head, so the cut, rating and capacity shown here come from the manufacturer record for this article number, while the chassis and press figures are common to every SP 5088.

Who should buy the P-2 SP 5088

Buy it when volume is the problem and confidentiality is not, and when heavier bales improve your haulage terms. One operator can run it, though keeping the belt fed at this rate is a full-time job, and 90 kg bales need a forklift. Skip it if any of the paper is personal, or if the extra bale weight over the SP 5080 does not change your transport costs.
