Does the SP 5088 shred any faster than the SP 5080?
No. Both machines use the same FA 500.3 cutting head, the same 500 mm conveyor feed and the same 11.5 kW drive, so at a 3.9 x 40 mm cut both take 180 to 200 sheets per pass at 80 g/m2. The entire difference is the press behind the head: the SP 5088 uses the 85 kN KP 88.1 and makes bales up to 950 mm long at 90 kg, while the SP 5080 makes an 800 mm bale at 80 kg. Choose between them on bale logistics, not on shredding speed.
How much floor space does it actually need?
The machine itself is 1273 mm wide, 3281 mm deep and 1792 mm high (50.1 x 129.2 x 70.6 in). That depth is the figure that catches people out: it is over three metres before you add clearance to load the conveyor at one end and pull a finished bale out at the other. Plan for a bay rather than a corner, and confirm your floor can carry 1660 kg on the machine's footprint plus a forklift alongside it.
Can it shred staples, paper clips, CDs and USB sticks?
Yes to all of them. The cutting rollers are induction-hardened solid steel and HSM rates the machine for paper, computer listings, crumpled paper, staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and DVDs, floppy disks and USB sticks. The full DIN 66399 rating is E-3 | F-1 | O-3 | P-4 | T-4, which means optical discs and electronic data carriers are covered by the same certificate as the paper. You do not need to remove fasteners before loading.
Is this machine NSA approved?
No. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 mm x 5 mm and requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This machine cuts 3.9 x 40 mm, which is far coarser, and it is not an EPL-listed device. It meets DIN 66399 P-4, which is the working standard for destroying personal data under commercial and data-protection policies, but it is not approved for US classified material.
What power supply does it need?
Three-phase. HSM lists this US article at 208 V / 60 Hz with an 11.5 kW drive; the equivalent European article is built for 400 V / 50 Hz. That is a hard-wired connection made by an electrician, not a plug-in load, and it needs to be in place before delivery. If your site runs 480 V, confirm the configuration with us before ordering rather than assuming a transformer will be supplied.
How much paper is in a 90 kg bale, and how often will I be tying one?
A 90 kg bale of P-4 shred represents roughly 18,000 to 20,000 sheets of 80 g/m2 office paper, so at the machine's rated 180 to 200 sheets per pass you are looking at a bale after a sustained run rather than after a single trolley. Practical bale frequency depends far more on how continuously the conveyor is fed than on the press. Budget strapping consumables accordingly: bales are tied with polyester strapping, which is bought separately.
What consumables does it use?
Three: polyester strapping for tying bales, cutting-head oil, and waste bags if you collect residue anywhere other than in the press. The automatic oiler doses the cutting rollers itself, so the operator's job is to keep the oil reservoir topped up rather than to lubricate on a schedule. None of these are included with the machine.
