The HSM Powerline SP 5080 with the 7/16 x 1 9/16-3 in (10.5 x 40-76 mm) head is the highest-throughput configuration of HSM's mid-size shredder-baler: 510-550 sheets per pass, rated DIN 66399 P-2, feeding an 80 kN KP 80 baling press. It is built for clearing large volumes of non-confidential paper, such as end-of-retention archives, obsolete print and surplus forms, and shipping them out as dense bales.

Built for volume rather than secrecy

A coarse head removes little material per sheet, so the 11.5 kW drive can take more than five times the stack of the P-5 head on the same chassis. In practice one operator loading the belt and one pallet truck can clear in a shift what would take a team with a bagging shredder much longer. The particle is still two-dimensional rather than a long strip, but it is large enough to carry readable words and fragments of lines.

That is why P-2 fits archives that have passed retention but were never sensitive, mailing and print overruns, superseded manuals, and packaging paperwork. It does not fit personnel, patient, customer or contract files.

Belt, press and safety equipment

Paper goes onto the conveyor as collected: HSM accepts crumpled paper, computer listing paper, staples and paper clips, plus CDs and DVDs, floppy disks, credit cards and USB sticks. The solid steel rollers are induction-hardened and lubricated by an automatic oiler. An emergency stop bar runs across the loading table, and dust extraction can be added. Behind the head, the KP 80 counterplate press bales up to 80 kg (HSM's band across the range is 40-80 kg depending on cut and material).

HSM's US web listing for this line uses the wrong unit labels, showing the drive as 115 hp and the intake as 500 inch; the values here come from the European datasheet, converted.

Alternatives to weigh against the P-2 SP 5080

• SP 5080, 6 x 40-53 mm (P-3): still 300-350 sheets per pass, and suitable for commercially confidential paper.
• SP 5080, 3.9 x 40 mm (P-4): the one to choose for personal data, at 180-200 sheets per pass.
• SP 5088, 10.5 x 40-76 mm: same 510-550 sheets per pass, with a bigger press for 90 kg bales, on a longer chassis.

Who the P-2 SP 5080 is for

It is for archive clearance projects, print and mailing houses, and records centres disposing of material that is not personal or contractual, where the main costs are labor and haulage. If anything in the stream is confidential, specify the P-3 or P-4 head instead; if loose shred is easy to remove on your site, the baler is not earning its keep.
