What does the baler actually save me?
Handling and haulage. Loose shredded paper is mostly air: it fills sacks fast, the sacks are awkward to move and stack, and a collection vehicle fills up on volume long before it reaches a useful weight. The KP 40 V press applies 44 kN and turns the output into 600 x 500 x 400 mm bales of up to 35 kg that stack on a pallet. Recyclers also generally pay more for baled paper than for bagged shred.
Is 5.8 mm strip cut secure enough for our confidential files?
No. A 5.8 mm strip runs the full length of the sheet, so complete lines of text survive intact and only the horizontal alignment is lost. DIN 66399 rates it P-2, which is a bulk-disposal level. If the paper contains names, account numbers, medical or HR information, buy the 5.8 x 50 mm P-3 version or, better, the 3.9 x 40 mm P-4 version of the same machine.
How does it compare with the SP 5080?
It is roughly half the machine. The SP 4040 V has a 428 mm intake, a 6.2 kW drive, 44 kN of press force and weighs 737 kg; the SP 5080 has a 500 mm intake, 11.5 kW, 80 kN and weighs 1350 kg, producing 80 kg bales instead of 35 kg. Choose the 4040 for a department or a single site with moderate volume, and the 5080 when a whole building's collection round feeds one machine.
Can it shred staples, clips and CDs?
Yes. HSM lists paper, computer listing paper, crumpled paper, staples, paper clips, CDs and DVDs, floppy disks and credit cards for this machine, so material can go in as collected without a de-stapling step. Remove ring binder mechanisms and metal clamps. Note that the strip-cut head carries an E-2 / O-2 rating for media, which is coarse: for optical media destruction take the P-4 variant.
What space and power does it need?
1117 mm wide, 2175 mm deep and 1981 mm high, so the headroom matters more than the floor area on this one, and you need clearance in front to eject a finished bale. It weighs 737 kg. Power is 208 V / 60 Hz three-phase in the North American configuration; HSM's European datasheet for the equivalent article lists 400 V / 50 Hz. Either way it is not a single-phase machine, and the connection is a separate cost.
