HSM Powerline SP 4040 V - 1/4 Industrial Shredder and Baler - HSM3513

The HSM Powerline SP 4040 V in its 1/4 in (5.8 mm) strip-cut form is a combined industrial shredder and vertical baler rated DIN 66399 P-2, taking 104 sheets per pass and pressing the output into bales of up to 77 lb (35 kg). It is the fastest and least secure of the three SP 4040 V cutting heads, and the only one that cuts strips instead of particles. It is aimed at sites clearing large amounts of non-sensitive paper that want the waste to leave as compact bales rather than sacks.

What a strip-cut baler is actually for

Loose shred is mostly air. Bagged, it fills a collection vehicle long before the load gets heavy, and somebody has to drag every sack. On this machine the strips drop straight into the KP 40 V press, which compacts them at 44 kN into blocks of 23.6 x 19.7 x 15.7 in (600 x 500 x 400 mm). Those blocks stack on a pallet, and recyclers generally value baled paper above bagged shred, so the press changes the economics of disposal as much as the handling.

The strip head also asks the least of the drive. Each knife makes one long cut rather than chopping the strip again, so the same 6.2 kW motor pushes more paper per pass than on the particle-cut versions. The cutting rollers are solid steel, induction-hardened, and HSM lists staples, paper clips, crumpled paper and computer listing paper among the accepted materials, along with CDs and DVDs, floppy disks and credit cards.

Security limits of a 1/4 in strip

A strip runs the full length of the page. Lines of text survive along each strip; only the layout across the page is lost. DIN 66399 caps P-2 strips at 6 mm wide, and this 5.8 mm strip sits just inside that limit. P-2 suits internal paper whose disclosure would be a nuisance, not a breach: obsolete forms, print overruns, manuals, routine operational paperwork. The media ratings (E-2 and O-2) are equally coarse.

• SP 4040 V at 1/4 x 2 in (5.8 x 50 mm), P-3: the same press and drive, a true particle, and 96 sheets per pass. Eight sheets is a small price for a full security level.
• SP 4040 V at 3.9 x 40 mm, P-4: the head to specify for personal data, at 80 sheets per pass, with E-3 and O-3 media ratings.
• SP 5080: the next size up, with a 500 mm intake, an 11.5 kW drive, an 80 kN press and bales up to 80 kg, for building-wide volumes.
• FA 400.2 strip cut: the same 104-sheet head without a press, collecting into a 121.5 US gal (460 L) bin, if loose shred is not a problem for you.

Who should choose the strip-cut SP 4040 V

Choose it for print rooms, mailing operations, warehouses and archive clearances where the paper is not confidential and the real cost is handling and hauling. Look elsewhere if any of the paper carries names, account details, HR or patient information: P-2 is not a privacy level, and the P-3 or P-4 heads on the same chassis cost little in throughput.
