Why does capacity drop from 65-70 sheets to 28-32?
Because the cutting head is doing roughly five times as much cutting per page. The P-4 head makes 3.9 mm longitudinal cuts and breaks them every 40 mm; this one makes 2 mm cuts and breaks them every 15 mm. More cuts means more resistance, more heat and a lower feed rate. Halving the sheet rate for one security level is the standard cost of moving from P-4 to P-5 and is not specific to HSM.
Is 2 x 15 mm a micro cut or a cross cut?
Under DIN 66399 the security level is what matters, and 2 x 15 mm is 30 mm², which places it in P-5. P-5, P-6 and P-7 are conventionally described as micro cut, so micro cut is the right label. Note it sits exactly on the 30 mm² boundary rather than inside it, and its 2 mm width is too wide for P-6, which additionally requires a maximum 1 mm particle width as well as a 10 mm² area.
Is this NSA approved for classified material?
No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle — 5 mm² — and separately requires the specific model to be listed on the NSA Evaluated Products List. This machine cuts 30 mm² particles, six times that area, and is not an EPL-listed product. P-5 is a high commercial security level, not a classified-material level. Anyone describing a P-5 machine as NSA approved is wrong, and we will not.
Can it still take staples and paper clips at this cut size?
Yes. HSM builds this head on solid steel cutting rollers and rates the machine for mixed material rather than clean paper only. That is genuinely unusual at P-5 — many high-security shredders require the material to be stripped first, which adds a labour step that quietly costs more than the machine. Ring-binder mechanisms and heavy clips should still come out.
How many sheets fit in the 290 litre bin at P-5?
More than the volume suggests, because fine particles pack densely. A rough working figure is 20,000 to 25,000 sheets, though it varies with paper stock and how much the shred settles. In terms of your working day, the bin is rarely the constraint at P-5 — the 28-to-32-sheet feed rate is. You will spend far more time feeding the machine than emptying it.
Is it noticeably quieter than the FA 400.2?
Slightly. HSM quotes approximately 58 dB(A) at idle for the 450.2 against 61 dB(A) for the FA 400.2. Three decibels is a real but modest difference, and both figures are idle rather than under load. The more relevant point is that the 450.2's smaller cabinet means it is usually installed where people work, so that 58 dB(A) figure is one you will actually hear, unlike a machine in a dedicated destruction room.
What power does it need, and can we run it on a normal outlet?
No. It is a three-phase machine. HSM lists the EU article at 400 V / 50 Hz; a North American installation runs at a different voltage and 60 Hz, so confirm the exact configuration with us before ordering. Installation needs an electrician and a suitable supply at the intended location, which is worth establishing before the machine arrives rather than after.
