Description

The HSM HL 7009 is a channel baling press for sites producing cardboard and mixed paper faster than a vertical baler can keep up with. It applies 700 kN of pressing force through a 9.2 kW main drive, and turns loose material into wire-tied bales of up to 600 kg measuring 1100 x 1100 x 1200 mm.

The distinction that matters is horizontal versus vertical. A vertical baler is loaded from the front, compressed downwards, and emptied by an operator who has to be present for every bale. A horizontal press like the HL 7009 is fed continuously into a channel and ejects finished bales at the far end, which means it can be paired with a conveyor, a tipping unit or a bevelled hopper and left to run. If your cardboard arrives all day rather than in scheduled batches, that changes the labour cost of baling completely.

Baling wire is a consumable and is not included. Hoppers, lifting and tilting systems, conveyors and automatic filling variants are options rather than standard equipment — specify them at the point of order, because retrofitting a feed system to an installed press is expensive.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

The HL 7009 belongs on a site where packaging waste is continuous and substantial: distribution centres, supermarkets and retail depots, printing works, packaging converters, waste transfer stations, and manufacturers who receive everything in cardboard. The test is simple. If someone is spending a meaningful part of every day baling, or if cardboard is being collected loose because baling cannot keep pace, a horizontal press pays for itself in labour and haulage before it pays for itself in material value.

Do not buy it for modest volumes. This is a 7,400 kg machine on a three-phase supply, and it needs a prepared floor, a feed arrangement and space for bales to be removed. A site producing a few bales a week is better served by a vertical baler at a fraction of the cost and complexity.

Do not buy it for beverage containers or drums. PET bottles and cans need a crusher — the Crusher 1049 SA for volume reduction or the CP 4988 if you want PET bales — and metal drums need the FP 3000 barrel press. Feeding drums or bottles into a channel baler damages the wire-tying mechanism.

Lastly, agree your bale format with your recycler before ordering. A 600 kg bale at 1100 x 1100 x 1200 mm is a common mill specification, but if your offtake contract calls for a different size you will be arguing with a machine that cannot change it.

Is the motor really 10.5 kW as the product title says?

Not exactly, and we would rather correct it than repeat it. HSM's own horizontal baling press technical data gives the HL 7009 drive as 9.2 kW plus a 1.5 kW secondary motor on a 3 x 400 V / 50 Hz supply, which totals 10.7 kW rather than 10.5 kW. The difference is small but it is the sort of figure an electrical contractor sizes a supply from, so use the manufacturer's 9.2 + 1.5 kW split when you plan the installation.

What size and weight are the bales?

1100 x 1100 x 1200 mm (W x H x L), weighing up to 600 kg depending on material and moisture. Cardboard bales at the top of that range; loose mixed paper and film come in lighter. Confirm the format against your recycler's specification before ordering, because bale dimensions and weight are usually written into an offtake agreement and a channel press cannot be adjusted to a different bale size after installation.

How are the bales tied?

With Quicklink baling wire in 2.45 x 4400 mm lengths. Wire is the standard for paper and cardboard because mills are set up to strip and recover it during pulping, unlike polyester strap. Wire is a consumable and is not supplied with the machine, so build it into the running cost alongside power and servicing. The CP 4988 PET machine uses polyester strap instead, for the opposite reason — wire would contaminate a plastics stream.

Can it bale plastic film as well as cardboard?

Yes. HSM specifies the HL 7009 for mixed paper, cardboard and plastic film, so a single machine can serve all three streams. In practice you would bale them separately rather than mixed, because a clean single-material bale is worth substantially more than a contaminated one, and most recyclers will reject or downgrade mixed bales.

Why is a horizontal press better than a vertical baler here?
