Description

The HSM CP 4988 does two jobs in one pass: it crushes PET bottles and beverage cans, then compresses and straps the crushed material into a bale. Throughput is 4,000 one-litre bottles an hour and HSM quotes up to 90% volume reduction in a single cycle, with finished bales of up to 100 kg.

That combination is the point of the machine. A crusher alone reduces volume but leaves you with loose material in containers; a baler alone handles material that is already flat. The CP 4988 takes bottles as they arrive and produces a strapped, stackable, transportable bale that a recycler will accept as a commodity rather than as waste. For a high-volume site, that is the difference between paying for disposal and being paid for material.

Polyester strapping is a consumable and is not included. HSM specifies strapping tape type WG 65 for this machine; budget for it as an ongoing cost at three straps per bale.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

The CP 4988 makes sense when you handle beverage containers in genuine volume and the output has commercial value. Bottling and beverage plants, large stadiums and arenas, deposit-return scheme operators, waste management contractors handling PET streams, and large hotel or catering groups are the typical fit. If your recycler pays a better rate for baled material than for loose, the machine has a calculable payback rather than being a cost centre.

Do not buy it if you only need to stop paying to haul air. Crushing alone gets you a three-to-fourfold volume reduction, and the HSM Crusher 1049 SA does that at 2,400 bottles an hour into a 290 litre container for considerably less money and much less floor space. Baling is only worth paying for if someone downstream wants bales.

Do not buy it for cardboard, paper or film. It is a beverage-container machine. Mixed paper and cardboard belong in a horizontal baler such as the HSM HL 7009, and steel or metal barrels belong in the FP 3000 barrel press. Feeding the wrong stream into a crusher-baler damages it and voids any sensible warranty conversation.

Finally, do not buy it if nobody will be there to strap. The strapping on this model is manual and three-fold, so it needs an operator at the end of each bale. If you want unattended baling you are looking at a different class of machine entirely.

What is the difference between this and the Crusher 1049 SA?

The 1049 SA crushes bottles and cans into a 290 litre container at 2,400 bottles an hour. The CP 4988 crushes and then bales, at 4,000 bottles an hour, producing strapped bales of up to 100 kg with up to 90% volume reduction. Buy the 1049 SA if you just need less volume in the bin; buy the CP 4988 if the material has to leave your site as a saleable, transportable bale.

How is the bale strapped, and does the machine do it automatically?

No, the strapping is manual. HSM specifies manual three-fold strapping using continuous polyester strap, so an operator applies three straps at the end of each bale cycle. Polyester rather than steel wire is a deliberate choice for PET: it is safer to handle, does not contaminate the plastic stream, and does not need cutters at the receiving end. The consumable is HSM strapping tape type WG 65 and it is not supplied with the machine.

How heavy are the bales and how do I move them?

Up to 100 kg, which is about 220 pounds. That is deliberately below the weight at which you would need a forklift for every bale — a pallet truck and a pallet will handle them, and they stack. If your recycler's collection vehicle expects bales in a particular size band, check that 100 kg PET bales fit their handling before you commit, because bale format is often specified in the offtake agreement.

Will it take aluminium cans as well as PET?

Yes. HSM specifies the CP 4988 for PET beverage bottles and aluminium cans. Mixed feeding is normal for a machine of this type, although your recycler will almost certainly want the streams baled separately rather than mixed, since a mixed bale is worth far less than two clean ones. Do not feed glass, aerosols or any pressurised container.

What is its footprint and power requirement?

HSM publishes a machine width of 990 mm and a height of 1800 mm for this model but does not publish the depth, motor rating or electrical connection in its public product data, so we have not guessed at them.
