Description

HSM article 1070070120 is the ShredVANTAGE plastic console lockable shred bin: a 24 US gallon all-plastic collection console measuring 29 inches high by 21 wide by 17 deep, weighing about 13 lb empty, and secured by a slam lock. It is a static console designed to stand in public-facing space, not a wheeled cart. Please note: this listing is titled as a 65-gallon shredder bin. That title is incorrect — HSM part 1070070120 is the 24-gallon ShredVANTAGE console. The 65-gallon wheeled bin is part 1070070180. We have corrected the specification below and are correcting the title.

Compatible Models

The console is machine-independent. It is a pre-shred collection point, so it works alongside any shredder or shredding service. Its distinguishing feature within HSM's range is that it is moulded entirely from plastic rather than built as a laminate cabinet, which makes it light, liquid-resistant and washable — the reason it is specified so often for healthcare and laboratory corridors where a wood-veneer console would not survive a cleaning regime.

Empty consoles nest and stack, so a fleet of them ships and stores in a fraction of the space that rigid cabinet consoles need. The slam lock is available in multiple key codes, which lets you separate keying between departments.

If you are replacing laminate consoles that have swollen at the base from mopping, this is the direct answer to that problem. If you need volume rather than a presentable finish, the wheeled 32-gallon cart (1070070170) gives you a third more capacity and wheels for less money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this really a 65-gallon bin?

No, and this is worth being blunt about. HSM part 1070070120 is the ShredVANTAGE plastic console, rated at 24 US gallons and measuring 29 by 21 by 17 inches. The 65-gallon wheeled shred bin is a different product, part 1070070180, measuring 40.5 by 25 by 29.5 inches. If you have specified 1070070120 expecting 65 gallons, order 1070070180 instead. We are correcting this listing's title.

How does a slam lock differ from a hasp and padlock?

A slam lock latches automatically when the lid is closed and needs a key to release it, so there is no padlock to lose and no way for the container to be left unsecured by accident. HSM's wheeled shred carts use a moulded hasp instead, which needs a padlock you supply. Slam locks are the better fit for public-facing consoles because staff cannot forget to lock them; hasps are better where you need to control access with your own site-wide padlock system.

Can I get several consoles keyed alike, or keyed differently?

Both. HSM offers the slam lock in multiple key codes. Keyed alike is the usual choice for a facilities team collecting from a whole building; keyed differently makes sense where separate departments must not be able to open each other's consoles, for example between clinical and administrative areas. Decide before you order, because rekeying afterwards is a service job.

Is it suitable for a clinical or laboratory corridor?

It is the reason the all-plastic construction exists. The console is moulded plastic throughout with no laminate or particleboard, so it tolerates wiping down and does not swell where a mop touches the base. It is widely specified for healthcare environments on exactly that basis. What it is not is a fire-rated or chemically resistant container — it is a paper collection console, and clinical waste streams need their own containers.

Why is it so light?

Thirteen pounds empty is a consequence of being a moulded plastic shell rather than a weighted cabinet. That makes it easy to reposition and cheap to ship, and it means empty units nest and stack for storage. The trade-off is that an empty console can be knocked over more easily than a heavy cabinet, so it is best placed against a wall or in an alcove rather than free-standing in a busy walkway.
