Why is 2 x 15 mm P-5 and not P-6?
DIN 66399 classifies by particle area with additional width limits. 2 x 15 mm is 30 mm2, which is exactly the P-5 ceiling of 30 mm2. P-6 requires 10 mm2 or less with a maximum width of 1 mm, so a 2 mm wide particle cannot reach P-6 regardless of length. This machine sits right on the P-5 boundary - correctly rated, with no headroom either way.
Can it shred CDs, DVDs or credit cards?
We would not feed them. MBM's Destroyit spec sheet clears P-2 and P-4 models for the most common CDs and DVDs and does not extend that statement to P-5 or higher cutting heads. Paper with staples and paper clips is fine. If you need to destroy media alongside documents, keep a P-4 machine or a dedicated media destroyer for that work rather than risking a 2 x 15 mm cutting head that is expensive to replace.
How much throughput am I giving up versus the P-4 model?
About a third. The P-4 DSH0501L is rated 37-39 sheets at 70 gsm; this one is 24-26 on the same chassis and motor. In practice, with US 20 lb bond and MBM's own warning that realistic throughput can be half the theoretical figure, plan on 15 to 20 sheets a comfortable pass. Over a day of steady shredding that difference is noticeable, so only pay it if P-5 is actually required.
Does the lifetime shaft warranty apply to this model?
Yes. MBM states that its hardened steel Destroyit cutting shafts are warranted for life, and footnotes only one exception: super micro-cut shafts, which get one year. A 2 x 15 mm cross-cut head is not super micro-cut, so it keeps lifetime cover. That is a genuine advantage of choosing P-5 over P-7 if your requirement allows it.
How often will the bin need emptying?
Less often than the P-4 version at the same sheet count, because smaller particles pack denser into the 44-gallon bin. Against that, you feed more passes to destroy the same documents. Net effect for a typical department is emptying roughly weekly. The full-bin sensor stops the machine automatically, so an overlooked bin costs availability rather than causing a jam.
What supply and floor space does it need?
A dedicated 115 V, 20 amp line, and a footprint of about 23.25 by 25.25 inches with the machine standing 39.75 inches tall. Leave clearance at the front for the pull-out bin and enough room for an operator to stand and feed. It ships at 378 lb on castors, so it rolls on hard floors once positioned but is not something one person relocates across a carpeted office.
Is this machine NSA approved?
No. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 mm by 5 mm and the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. A 2 x 15 mm particle is three times wider than the dimensional limit allows, so P-5 does not come close regardless of listing status. If you need NSA-grade destruction, start from a super micro-cut machine such as the DSH0503L and verify the exact model against the current EPL yourself.
