Description

If you want one machine to cover an entire floor and the requirement is P-4, this is the sensible choice in MBM's office range. The 4005 cross-cut delivers a 4 x 40 mm particle - 160 mm², right on the P-4 limit - while still taking 37 to 39 sheets a pass, which is more than the 4003 manages at the same security level and enough to keep a queue moving. The 4005 is a floor-standing machine on castors, not a deskside unit: it stands nearly 40 inches tall, ships at 378 lb and needs its own 20 amp circuit, so treat it as a shared departmental asset that gets sited once and stays there.

Key Features

  • 4 x 40 mm cross cut at DIN 66399 P-4, the level most privacy policies and client contracts settle on.
  • 37-39 sheets per pass at 70 gsm - the highest P-4 capacity in the 115 V Destroyit office line.
  • 2.12 hp motor, run on a dedicated 115 V, 20 amp circuit.
  • 16-inch feed opening for continuous forms, letter, legal and folded large formats.
  • Photocell automatic start and stop, so the operator never touches a switch during a run.
  • Automatic reverse on overload and a safety flap across the throat.
  • Magnetic door protection cuts the drive when the cabinet is opened; thermal motor overload protection.
  • 44-gallon pull-out shred bin, machine mobile on castors.
  • Hardened steel cutting shafts, warranted for life.

MBM quotes sheet capacity at 70 gsm paper on its published spec sheet and prints an explicit caveat alongside it: "realistic throughputs can be as low as half that of the theoretical capacities quoted." US 20 lb bond is roughly 75 gsm and slightly heavier, so plan around the lower end of the range, not the headline number.

What's in the Box

Supplied assembled on castors with the pull-out shred bin, operating manual and power cord. Disposable bags are not included; the bin can be run bare or lined. Confirm the current liner part number for the 4005 bin with your dealer before ordering, as MBM does not print it on the model spec sheet.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

This is the default departmental shredder. A 30 to 60 person floor, a busy back office, a records room that receives steady rather than seasonal volume - the 4005 cross-cut is sized for that and has the motor to sustain it. Compared with the DSH0396O (4003, same P-4 cut) you gain about three sheets a pass and a substantially heavier drive train; compared with the DSH0500L strip-cut you lose about thirteen sheets a pass and gain two full DIN security levels, which is almost always the right trade.

Do not buy it if a contract or classification specifies P-5 or P-7. P-4 permits 160 mm² particles, and no amount of good practice changes the rating - go to the DSH0502L (2 x 15 mm, P-5) or the DSH0503L (0.8 x 5 mm, P-7), accepting the capacity drop to 24-26 and 10-12 sheets respectively. Do not buy it for continuous archive destruction either; clearing pallets of boxes is work for the conveyor-fed 4108 or the 4606, both three-phase machines. And if the machine will only ever serve two or three people, this is more shredder than you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P-4 enough for GDPR, HIPAA or state privacy law?

P-4 is the level most organisations adopt as their baseline for documents containing personal data, and no major regime names a DIN level directly - they require destruction that makes reconstruction impracticable. A 4 x 40 mm particle meets that test for ordinary confidential records. Where a contract, classification scheme or internal policy explicitly names P-5 or higher, this machine does not meet it and you need the DSH0502L or DSH0503L.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips?

Yes to all of them. MBM's spec sheet states that P-2 and P-4 models are suitable for the most common CDs and DVDs, and paper with staples and clips is routine. Cards and discs are abrasive - feed them individually, not buried in a stack of paper, and oil the cutting unit after any batch of media. Do not feed rigid plastic cases, drives or anything metal beyond office fasteners.

How many people can share it before it bottlenecks?

Realistically 30 to 60 people doing normal daily shredding, or a smaller team with heavier volume. The constraint is usually the 44-gallon bin rather than the motor. If two people are regularly waiting, or you are clearing filing cabinets rather than day-to-day paper, the answer is a 4606 or 4108 with a hopper or conveyor, not a second unit of this size.

What electrical supply does it need?

115 volts on a dedicated 20 amp line, stated on MBM's spec sheet. A shared 15 amp office circuit is not adequate for the 2.12 hp motor's starting current. Sort the outlet out before the machine arrives - it ships at 378 lb, and moving it to solve an electrical problem after installation means a pallet jack and two people.

How often will the bin need emptying?

Cross-cut particles settle well, so the 44-gallon bin holds considerably more shredded paper than it would with the strip-cut version of this machine. For a busy floor, expect once or twice a week. The machine stops automatically when the bin is full rather than compacting waste against the shafts, so a missed emptying costs you availability, not damage.

Does it oil itself?

The Destroyit office range uses automatic oil injection on cross-cut models, so routine lubrication is handled for you. That covers normal paper work. After a run of credit cards or optical media, or if you notice cutting performance falling off, MBM's manual instructs you to oil the cutting unit manually as well. Use proper shredder oil - aerosol lubricants and vegetable oils damage the shafts.

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

Legal and letter both go in long edge first through the 16-inch throat, and MBM sizes that opening for continuous forms and large formats. Tabloid needs one fold. Remember the 37-39 sheet figure assumes letter or A4; a stack of legal sheets is more paper per pass, so reduce the handful accordingly.
