Description

Nothing else in this Destroyit group moves paper as fast as the DSH0394. It is the 4003 in 6 mm strip-cut, rated at 43 to 45 sheets per pass, driven by a 1.75 HP motor through a 16-inch feed opening into a 44-gallon bin. That combination is built for bulk: file room clearances, decommissioned archives, print overruns, end-of-retention purges. The security level is P-2, the second-lowest in DIN 66399, and that is the deliberate trade. Buy it for volume of non-sensitive paper; do not buy it for confidential records.

Key Features

  • 43 to 45 sheets per pass — The highest rated capacity of any machine in this selection, measured on 70 gsm paper.
  • 1.75 HP continuous-duty motor — Sized for sustained bulk work, not intermittent departmental shredding.
  • 16-inch feed opening — Accepts tabloid, ledger and continuous printout flat — which matters when the point is speed.
  • CD and DVD capable — MBM confirms the P-2 and P-4 4003 models for the most common optical discs, alongside staples, paper clips and credit cards.
  • 44-gallon shred bin — Necessary at this throughput, though strip-cut waste is bulky and will still need frequent emptying.
  • No oiler on the strip-cut build — MBM fits automatic oilers to the cross-cut and super micro-cut 4003 only. Strip-cut shafts do not require it, which removes a consumable.
  • Lifetime cutting shaft warranty — Hardened steel shafts milled at MBM’s Balingen factory, warranted for the life of the machine.
  • Automatic reverse, ECC and safety shield — The patented Electronic Capacity Control indicator reads remaining capacity before you commit a stack, the cutters reverse automatically when overfed, and the electronically controlled safety shield plus bin-full cut-off keep the machine safe in shared use.

What’s in the Box

  • Destroyit 4003 strip-cut shredder in wooden cabinet on casters
  • Operating manual

Shred bags are not included and are not required — the bin empties directly. AC0901 bags fit the 4003 if bagged waste is part of your disposal process. No oil is needed on the strip-cut model.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this if the job is volume disposal of paper that is not personally identifiable or contractually confidential: superseded print jobs, internal drafts, expired catalogues, general clear-outs. At 43 to 45 sheets through a 16-inch throat, it will clear boxes of paper in the time a P-5 machine takes to do one file.

Do not buy this for records containing personal, medical or financial data. A 6 mm strip runs the full length of the page and text stays readable along it; DIN 66399 rates P-2 for internal material only. For anything covered by a privacy obligation, move to the 4 x 40 mm P-4 4003 (34 to 36 sheets), the 2 x 15 mm P-5 version (16 to 18 sheets), or the super micro-cut P-7 build. All share this cabinet, throat and bin, so the only thing that changes is the cutting head and the throughput.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P-2 acceptable for documents with names or addresses on them?

No. P-2 permits particles up to 2000 mm², and a 6 mm full-length strip leaves lines of text intact. DIN 66399 positions P-2 for general internal documents where disclosure would be inconvenient rather than harmful. Anything falling under HIPAA, GLBA, state breach-notification law or a client confidentiality clause should be destroyed at P-4 or above. Use the P-4 or P-5 4003 for those.

How fast is it really?

MBM rates it at 43 to 45 sheets on 70 gsm paper, and states in its own literature that real throughput can be as low as half the theoretical figure depending on paper condition and how it is fed. Even at the conservative end that is faster than any other machine in this group. In continuous use the practical limiter is usually bin emptying, not the cutters.

Why does the bin fill so quickly for a 44-gallon bin?

Because strip-cut waste does not compact. Long strips tangle and trap air, so a given page count occupies far more volume than the same pages cross-cut. Expect to empty this machine noticeably more often than a P-4 or P-5 model shredding the same number of sheets. Compressing the waste as you empty helps, but it is an inherent characteristic of strip-cut.

Does it need oil?

No automatic oiler is fitted to the strip-cut 4003 — MBM reserves that for the cross-cut and super micro-cut builds. Strip-cut shafts run without routine lubrication in normal office use, which removes a recurring consumable and is one of the reasons this configuration is cheap to run.

Can it shred CDs, DVDs and credit cards?

Yes. MBM confirms the P-2 and P-4 4003 models for the most common CDs and DVDs, and the hardened shafts also take staples, paper clips and credit cards. Feed discs individually. Bear in mind that strip-cutting a disc destroys it as playable media but is not a high-security data destruction method for the data it held.

What power supply and floor space does it need?

A standard 115 V outlet; the 1.75 HP motor does not require a dedicated line. The cabinet is 21.5 inches deep, 25.25 inches wide and 37.25 inches high, and it ships at about 166 lb. It rolls on casters once in position and clears a standard doorway.
