Frequently Asked Questions
Does it really need a dedicated 20 amp circuit?
Yes. MBM specifies 115 volts with a 20 amp dedicated line for the 3105. This is not a suggestion you can work around with an extension lead — a 2.125 HP motor drawing start-up current on a shared circuit will trip breakers and can damage the supply. Budget for an electrician if you do not already have a suitable outlet where the machine will stand.
How much faster is it than the 3104 at the same security level?
Substantially. Both cut 2 x 15 mm at P-5, but the 3105 is rated at 24 to 26 sheets against 14 to 17 for the 3104, both figures on 70 gsm paper. Over a working day that difference compounds into a lot of operator time. It comes from the motor: 2.125 HP against 1 HP.
What oil does the automatic oiler use and how often?
MBM supplies shredder oil for Destroyit auto-oiler machines in six-quart bottles, ordered separately. The oiler doses the shafts automatically during operation, so there is no manual schedule — your job is to keep the reservoir topped up. Do not substitute general-purpose lubricants or aerosol oils; they can gum the shafts and are not covered by the shaft warranty.
Can it shred CDs and DVDs?
Not this configuration. MBM lists the 4 x 40 mm cross-cut 3105 for common CDs and DVDs; the 2 x 15 mm P-5 version is not cleared for optical media. It does take staples, paper clips and credit cards. If discs are part of your workload and you need P-5 for paper, you will need a second machine.
How heavy is it and can we move it ourselves?
Shipping weight is around 324 lb. The cabinet is on casters so it rolls once it is in position, but getting it off a truck, through doorways and over thresholds is a two-person job with equipment. Check your route and any lift capacity before delivery — this is not a machine two people carry up a staircase.
Is it suitable for a shared open-plan floor?
Functionally yes: the photo cell start/stop and ECC indicator make it forgiving of untrained users, and the 37-gallon bin means infrequent emptying. MBM does not publish a decibel rating for the 3105, so we cannot give you a noise figure. If an acoustic limit is written into your workplace spec, treat that as unverified and ask before committing.
