Description

What sets the DSH0323 apart from every other P-5 machine in the Destroyit range is the 16-inch feed opening. That is four inches wider than the 3104 and 3105 and nearly six wider than the 2604, and it is the reason to choose this model: tabloid, ledger, computer printout and folded plans all go in flat. It cuts 2 x 15 mm at DIN 66399 level P-5 into a 44-gallon bin, the largest here. Capacity is modest at 13 to 16 sheets — this is a wide-mouth machine on a 1 HP motor, not a high-volume one.

Key Features

  • 16-inch feed opening — The widest throat in this Destroyit group. Wide-format and unfolded printouts feed flat instead of being torn or folded.
  • P-5 security — 2 x 15 mm particles equal 30 mm², at the DIN 66399 limit for P-5 — a step above standard office cross-cut.
  • 44-gallon shred bin — The largest bin in this selection, matched to the wider throat so bulky sheets do not fill it prematurely.
  • Electronically controlled safety shield — The SPS shield sits over the throat and the motor cuts power whenever the cabinet door is opened or the bin reaches full.
  • Electronic Capacity Control — Patented ECC indicator gives a live reading of remaining sheet capacity.
  • Zero-energy sleep mode — Power supply is cut off after 30 minutes of inactivity rather than held in standby.
  • No oiler and no bags — MBM specifies no oiler for the 4001, and the bin empties directly, so there are no routine consumables.
  • Automatic reverse on overfeed — If the cutters are given more than they can take, the machine reverses and returns the stack rather than stalling with paper trapped in the head. Combined with the ECC indicator, this keeps a shared machine running without an operator having to clear jams by hand.

What’s in the Box

  • Destroyit 4001 P-5 cross-cut shredder in wooden cabinet on casters
  • Operating manual

Shred bags are not included and are not required. If your waste contractor requires bagged shred, AC0901 bags fit the 4001. There is no oiler on this model, so no oil to order.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this if your documents are physically large as well as sensitive: engineering drawings, ledger printouts, tabloid reports, wide spreadsheets. The 16-inch throat is the whole argument, and P-5 security means you are not compromising on the destruction standard to get it. A records room handling mixed paper sizes is the natural home.

Do not buy this if you are shredding ordinary letter-size paper in volume. Thirteen to sixteen sheets from a 1 HP motor is modest, and the DSH0316L gives you the same P-5 cut for less money if a 12-inch throat is enough. If you want the wide throat with more speed, the 4003 in the same cabinet runs a 1.75 HP motor, adds an automatic oiler and lifts the P-5 rating to 16 to 18 sheets. This configuration also does not take CDs or DVDs — only the P-4 4001 is cleared for optical media.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the 4001 over the cheaper 3104 at the same P-5 cut?

Throat width and bin size. The 4001 gives you 16 inches against 12, and 44 gallons against 32. If you only ever shred letter and A4, that is money spent on capability you will not use — the 3104 is the sensible buy. If tabloid, ledger or wide printout crosses your desk regularly, folding every sheet to fit a 12-inch machine wastes far more time than the price difference.

Can it shred CDs and DVDs?

No. MBM confirms only the P-4 4 x 40 mm version of the 4001 as suitable for the most common CDs and DVDs. This 2 x 15 mm P-5 build is not cleared for optical media. It does take staples, paper clips and credit cards. If you need both P-5 paper destruction and disc destruction, plan on a separate media shredder.

Does it have an automatic oiler?

No. MBM lists the oiler as "none" for both the P-4 and P-5 4001. For a fine cross-cut head that is worth knowing: performance depends on the shafts staying lubricated, so follow the manual’s guidance on periodic oiling with proper shredder oil. If automatic lubrication matters to you, the 4003 in the same cabinet has it.

What power supply does it need?

A standard 115 V grounded outlet. The motor is rated up to 1 horsepower, so no dedicated circuit is normally required — unlike the 3105, which needs a dedicated 20 amp line. This makes the 4001 easy to place in an existing office without electrical work.

How often will a 44-gallon bin need emptying?

Less often than the smaller machines here, but bear in mind that wide sheets produce proportionally more waste per page. For a records office running 200 to 300 mixed-size pages a day, weekly emptying is typical. The shredder cuts out automatically when the bin is full, so it will tell you rather than jamming.

Is P-5 overkill for general office paper?

Often, yes. P-4 is the level most privacy policies and federal regulations are satisfied by, and the P-4 4001 (DSH0324) takes 25 to 28 sheets against 13 to 16 here. Specify P-5 when something in writing requires it — a client contract, a government agency schedule, an internal risk assessment. Buying P-5 speculatively costs you roughly half your throughput.
