Description

The DSH0316L is the security-first build of the Destroyit 3104. Its 2 x 15 mm particle measures 30 mm², which places it at DIN 66399 level P-5 — a step beyond the P-4 that satisfies routine office policy, and the level normally reached for when documents carry higher consequence: legal files, board papers, medical records, contract negotiations. The chassis is identical to the other 3104 builds, so you get the same 12-inch throat and 32-gallon bin. What you give up is capacity: 14 to 17 sheets per pass against 22 to 25 on the P-4 version, and no CD or DVD capability.

Key Features

  • P-5 particle size — 2 x 15 mm equals 30 mm², at the DIN 66399 limit for P-5. That is roughly five times finer by area than a P-4 cut.
  • Same cabinet, higher security — 12-inch throat and 32-gallon bin shared with the strip-cut and P-4 versions, so it occupies identical floor space.
  • Takes staples, clips and credit cards — Hardened steel shafts accept fasteners and plastic cards. Optical media is not supported at this cut size.
  • Electronic Capacity Control — More useful at P-5 than anywhere else in the 3104 range, because the working margin between a good feed and a stall is narrow.
  • Lifetime cutting shaft warranty — P-5 cross-cut shafts carry MBM’s lifetime shaft cover — the shorter one-year term applies only to super micro-cut heads.
  • Safety shield and automatic cut-off — SPS shield, auto-reverse on overfeed, and cut-off when the door is open or the bin is full.
  • No oiler, no bags — No lubrication schedule and no disposable bag requirement.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this if a policy, contract or client audit specifies P-5 or "micro-cut equivalent" and you are shredding a moderate daily volume. A legal practice, a clinical records office or a finance team of ten to twenty people is the right fit. You keep the full-size 12-inch throat, which many competing P-5 machines in this price band do not offer.

Do not buy this if volume is your problem rather than security. At 14 to 17 sheets you will feel the difference against the DSH0315L, and if P-4 satisfies your obligations the P-4 model is the more sensible machine. Do not buy it if you shred CDs or DVDs — MBM does not clear the 2 x 15 mm cut for optical media, and the strip-cut or 4 x 40 mm 3104 does. And if you need P-5 at higher throughput, the 3105 in 2 x 15 mm reaches 24 to 26 sheets on a much larger motor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2 x 15 mm really P-5 and not P-6?

Yes, P-5. The particle area is 30 mm², exactly at the P-5 ceiling of 30 mm². P-6 requires 10 mm² or less with a particle width of 1 mm or less, which a 2 mm wide cut cannot meet regardless of its length. Anyone describing a 2 x 15 mm cut as P-6 has the standard wrong.

Why does capacity drop so much versus the P-4 model?

The cutters are making about five times as many cuts per sheet. Same 1 HP motor, much finer geometry, so the sheet count has to fall — 14 to 17 sheets against 22 to 25, both measured on 70 gsm paper. If that gap is going to hurt, either accept P-4 or move up to the 3105, which uses a 2.125 HP motor to hold 24 to 26 sheets at the same P-5 cut size.

Can it shred CDs, DVDs or ID badges?

No for optical media. MBM confirms only the strip-cut and 4 x 40 mm cross-cut 3104 models for CDs and DVDs; this 2 x 15 mm build is not on that list. Credit cards and similar PVC cards are fine, as are staples and paper clips. If you need to destroy discs and P-5 paper on the same machine, this pairing is not available in the 3104 and you should look at a separate media shredder.

Does P-5 satisfy HIPAA or GLBA?

Both regulations require that protected information be rendered unreadable and unreconstructable rather than naming a DIN level, so P-4 is normally accepted and P-5 exceeds the usual bar comfortably. Where P-5 becomes worth specifying is when a client contract, a state agency requirement or an internal risk assessment names it. Check the wording that binds you before paying for a security level you do not need.

What maintenance does it need?

Very little. There is no oiler and no oil to buy, no bags required, and the shafts are covered by MBM’s lifetime warranty on this cut type. Practical maintenance amounts to emptying the 32-gallon bin, keeping paper clips out of the bin area, and not forcing more than the ECC indicator says the cutters will take.

Will it take legal-size and tabloid paper?

Yes. The 12-inch feed opening accepts letter, A4 and legal in normal orientation, and tabloid at 11 inches wide also passes. Remember that wider sheets consume more of the cutters’ capacity, so a stack of tabloid will hit the limit at fewer sheets than the quoted 14 to 17.
