Description

Most offices that ask for "a proper shredder" are describing the DSH0315L. It is the Destroyit 3104 in 4 x 40 mm cross-cut, which puts it at DIN 66399 level P-4 — the level ordinarily specified for personnel files, client records and financial paperwork — while still taking 22 to 25 sheets at a time through a 12-inch throat. Against the strip-cut 3104 it trades a handful of sheets per pass for a genuinely different security classification. Against the 2 x 15 mm P-5 version it gives up a security step and gains roughly 50 percent more throughput. It is also one of only two 3104 builds MBM clears for CDs and DVDs.

Key Features

  • P-4 at 160 mm² exactly — A 4 x 40 mm particle is 160 mm², the ceiling DIN 66399 sets for P-4. It is a legitimate P-4 machine, not a P-3 rounded up.
  • Optical media capable — MBM confirms the 4 x 40 cross-cut 3104 for common CDs and DVDs, in addition to staples, paper clips and credit cards.
  • 12-inch throat — Takes letter, A4, legal and tabloid without folding — noticeably more useful than the 10.25-inch opening on the 2604.
  • Patented Electronic Capacity Control — Live indication of how loaded the cutters are, so operators learn the machine’s real limit instead of jamming it.
  • Electronically controlled safety shield — SPS shield with automatic reverse on overfeed and cut-off when the door is open or the bin is full.
  • 32-gallon reusable bin — Larger than the 2604’s 26 gallons, on a wooden cabinet mounted on casters.
  • No oiler to maintain — Unlike the 3105 and 4003, the 3104 has no automatic oiler and no oil consumption.

What’s in the Box

  • Destroyit 3104 cross-cut shredder in wooden cabinet on casters
  • Operating manual

Shred bags are not included. The bin is designed to be emptied directly; if bagging is required by your waste process, the correct part is AC0920.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this if you need documented P-4 destruction for a department of ten to thirty people and you want the machine to keep up with an afternoon of filing clear-out. The combination of a 12-inch throat, 32-gallon bin and confirmed optical media capability covers most general office destruction needs in one box.

Do not buy this if your policy specifies micro-cut, or if the documents include material where P-5 is contractually required — the DSH0316L is the same cabinet at 2 x 15 mm, at the cost of dropping to 14 to 17 sheets. Equally, do not buy it if you are feeding it continuously all day: at that duty the 3105 in 4 x 40 cross-cut takes 37 to 39 sheets on a 2.125 HP motor and will pay for itself in operator time. And if 22 to 25 sheets is more machine than a two-person office needs, the 2604 is the smaller, cheaper cabinet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does P-4 actually mean here?

DIN 66399 defines P-4 as a particle no larger than 160 mm². The 4 x 40 mm cut on this machine is exactly 160 mm², so it sits at the boundary and qualifies. In practice P-4 is the level most US organisations map to for HIPAA, GLBA and general personnel-record destruction. It is not sufficient where a policy explicitly names micro-cut, P-5, P-6 or P-7.

Can it handle CDs, DVDs and credit cards?

Yes to all three. MBM lists the 4 x 40 mm cross-cut 3104 as suitable for the most common CDs and DVDs, and the hardened shafts take staples, paper clips and credit cards across the range. Feed discs and cards individually rather than mixing them into a stack of paper, and expect the cutters to work harder on them than on paper.

How does it compare with the 3105 cross-cut?

Same 12-inch throat, but that is where the similarity ends. The 3105 has a 2.125 HP motor against 1 HP here, a 37-gallon bin against 32, an automatic oiler, and roughly 37 to 39 sheets per pass at P-4 against 22 to 25. It also weighs about 324 lb against 132 lb and requires a dedicated 20 amp line. The 3104 is the right choice for intermittent departmental use; the 3105 for continuous use.

Does it need oil or other consumables?

No oil. MBM does not fit an oiler to the 3104, and there are no bags to buy because the 32-gallon bin empties directly. The only routine consumable is your own time emptying it. This is a real total-cost-of-ownership advantage over the automatically oiled cross-cut machines higher in the range.

How often will the bin need emptying?

Cross-cut waste at P-4 compacts better than strip-cut, so a 32-gallon bin typically absorbs several thousand sheets. A department shredding a few hundred pages a day will usually empty it weekly. The machine stops automatically when the bin is full, so overfilling and the jams that follow are not a risk.

Is it quiet enough for an open-plan office?

MBM does not publish a decibel figure for the 3104, so we will not quote one. What the manufacturer does state is that the motor is a quiet single-phase unit with an enclosed gearbox, rated for continuous operation. Anecdotally these sit at normal office-machine volume, but if a specific dB limit is written into your fit-out spec, ask us to obtain a measured figure before you order.
