Description

Volume, not secrecy, is the reason to buy the DSH0314L. This is the strip-cut build of the Destroyit 3104: a 4 mm strip at DIN 66399 level P-2, 27 to 30 sheets per pass, fed through a 12-inch throat into a 32-gallon bin. It is the fastest and least expensive way through the 3104 chassis, and it is aimed squarely at offices clearing large quantities of internal paperwork — old print runs, superseded drafts, general correspondence — where the requirement is disposal rather than data protection. It also happens to be one of the two 3104 configurations MBM confirms for CDs and DVDs.

Key Features

  • 30-sheet strip-cut throughput — P-2 strips leave the cutters faster than any cross-cut geometry, which is why this configuration clears bulk paper in a fraction of the time.
  • 12-inch feed opening — Wide enough for letter, A4 and legal in normal orientation without folding.
  • Handles optical media — MBM confirms the strip-cut and 4 x 40 cross-cut 3104 models for common CDs and DVDs, alongside staples, paper clips and credit cards.
  • Electronic Capacity Control — The ECC indicator reads the stack before you commit it, which is how you keep a high-throughput machine running instead of reversing.
  • Electronically controlled safety shield — SPS shield over the throat, automatic reverse on overfeed, and power cut-off when the door is open or the bin is full.
  • Double overheating protection — Thermal protection on a continuous-duty single-phase motor.
  • 32-gallon reusable bin on casters — No disposable bag required; the wooden cabinet rolls on casters for repositioning.

What’s in the Box

  • Destroyit 3104 strip-cut shredder in wooden cabinet on casters
  • Operating manual

Shred bags are not included and are not required — the bin empties directly. If you bag your shred, the fitting part is AC0920, which also fits the 2503 and 2604. The 3104 has no automatic oiler; strip-cut heads do not need one.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy this if you are destroying paper by the ream and the sensitivity is low to moderate: internal memos, duplicate print jobs, expired marketing collateral, general office clear-outs. At 27 to 30 sheets a pass it will keep up with a busy shared print room, and the absence of an oiler means one less consumable to stock.

Do not buy this if the paper contains personal data. P-2 strips are 4 mm wide and full page length; DIN 66399 places P-2 at up to 2000 mm² per particle, and most privacy policies covering personnel, medical or financial records call for P-4 or better. For those, move to the DSH0315L (same machine, 4 x 40 mm cross-cut, P-4) or the DSH0316L (2 x 15 mm, P-5). The price difference between this and the cross-cut versions is small relative to the consequences of specifying the wrong level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P-2 secure enough for confidential documents?

Usually not. P-2 produces 4 mm strips running the full length of the page, and text remains legible along each strip. DIN 66399 positions P-2 for internal documents whose disclosure would be inconvenient rather than damaging. If you are shredding anything covered by HIPAA, GLBA, state breach-notification law or a client confidentiality clause, specify P-4 or higher — the DSH0315L or DSH0316L in this same cabinet.

Can it shred CDs and DVDs?

Yes. MBM specifies that the strip-cut and 4 x 40 mm cross-cut 3104 models handle the most common CDs and DVDs. The 2 x 15 mm P-5 version does not. Feed discs one at a time, not stacked with paper. Note that shredding a disc into strips destroys the media but is not a high-security data destruction method; for that you need a dedicated media shredder.

Does it need oiling?

No. MBM does not fit an oiler to the 3104 and strip-cut shafts do not require routine lubrication in normal office use. This is a genuine running-cost difference against the cross-cut 3105 and 4003, which carry automatic oilers and consume oil.

How many people can share one of these?

A 3104 strip-cut comfortably serves a floor of twenty to forty people doing ordinary volumes, or a smaller team doing heavy clear-outs. The limiting factor is rarely the cutters — it is the 32-gallon bin, which fills quickly on strip-cut waste because strips do not compact well. Expect to empty it more often than you would on a cross-cut machine at the same page count.

What size paper fits?

The feed opening is 12 inches. Letter, A4 and legal all pass through in normal orientation. Tabloid at 11 inches wide fits too, which the narrower 2604 cannot manage. Bound documents should be unbound first; the machine takes staples and clips but not ring binders or plastic combs.

What power supply does it need?

A standard 115 V grounded outlet. The motor is rated at up to 1 horsepower and is designed for continuous operation, so there is no published duty cycle limit for normal office work. No dedicated circuit is needed, unlike the 3105 in the same family, which requires a 20 amp dedicated line.
