Frequently Asked Questions
Is P-2 secure enough for confidential documents?
Usually not. P-2 produces 4 mm strips running the full length of the page, and text remains legible along each strip. DIN 66399 positions P-2 for internal documents whose disclosure would be inconvenient rather than damaging. If you are shredding anything covered by HIPAA, GLBA, state breach-notification law or a client confidentiality clause, specify P-4 or higher — the DSH0315L or DSH0316L in this same cabinet.
Can it shred CDs and DVDs?
Yes. MBM specifies that the strip-cut and 4 x 40 mm cross-cut 3104 models handle the most common CDs and DVDs. The 2 x 15 mm P-5 version does not. Feed discs one at a time, not stacked with paper. Note that shredding a disc into strips destroys the media but is not a high-security data destruction method; for that you need a dedicated media shredder.
Does it need oiling?
No. MBM does not fit an oiler to the 3104 and strip-cut shafts do not require routine lubrication in normal office use. This is a genuine running-cost difference against the cross-cut 3105 and 4003, which carry automatic oilers and consume oil.
How many people can share one of these?
A 3104 strip-cut comfortably serves a floor of twenty to forty people doing ordinary volumes, or a smaller team doing heavy clear-outs. The limiting factor is rarely the cutters — it is the 32-gallon bin, which fills quickly on strip-cut waste because strips do not compact well. Expect to empty it more often than you would on a cross-cut machine at the same page count.
What size paper fits?
The feed opening is 12 inches. Letter, A4 and legal all pass through in normal orientation. Tabloid at 11 inches wide fits too, which the narrower 2604 cannot manage. Bound documents should be unbound first; the machine takes staples and clips but not ring binders or plastic combs.
What power supply does it need?
A standard 115 V grounded outlet. The motor is rated at up to 1 horsepower and is designed for continuous operation, so there is no published duty cycle limit for normal office work. No dedicated circuit is needed, unlike the 3105 in the same family, which requires a 20 amp dedicated line.
