Description

The intimus 16.50 is a conveyor-fed industrial shredder built to clear paper by the pallet rather than by the armful. This configuration (SKU 655124) is the P-3 build, cutting 6 x 50 mm particles, rated by intimus at up to 330 sheets per pass and roughly 1,050 lb of paper per hour through a 19.7 in feed opening driven by a 10 HP three-phase motor.

What separates the P-3 build from the coarser 10 x 70 mm P-2 version of the same machine is straightforward: smaller particles, less throughput. At 300 mm² the 6 x 50 mm cut is comfortably inside the 320 mm² DIN 66399 allows at P-3, which is the level commonly written into commercial records-destruction contracts. If your work is contracted destruction for third parties, this is usually the configuration those contracts assume.

Key Features

  • 6 x 50 mm cross-cut particles — DIN 66399 P-3 (full intimus rating P-3 / O-3 / T-3 / E-2), at 300 mm² against a 320 mm² class limit.
  • Up to 330 sheets per pass and up to 1,050 lb per hour — this is the figure to compare against a collection contract when you are building a business case.
  • 19.7 in (500 mm) feed opening — takes tabloid, computer printout, bound documents and ring binders without pre-sorting.
  • Automatic infeed conveyor with paddle feed system — the operator loads the conveyor and walks away, rather than standing at a throat feeding by hand. On a machine of this throughput that is the difference between one person supervising and one person occupied.
  • SmartShred touchscreen control — run status, load and fault reporting on the machine rather than in a manual.
  • Integrated automatic oiler — cutting-cylinder lubrication is automated, which matters more here than on any office machine: intimus makes lubrication a written condition of warranty coverage and an industrial duty cycle consumes oil quickly.
  • Bin-full alarm with automatic shutoff — the machine stops itself rather than packing the waste chamber solid.
  • 10 HP motor on 220 V / 3-phase / 60 Hz — three-phase supply required.
  • 120 US gallon (approx. 454 litre) waste collection — sized to the throughput rather than to an office footprint.
  • Optional APU100 dust extraction — worth specifying if the machine will run continuously in an occupied space; high-volume paper shredding generates real airborne dust.

What's in the Box

Delivered as an industrial installation on freight, not as a boxed product: shredder, integrated infeed conveyor and SmartShred control. It requires a 220 V three-phase supply and a floor and access route that will take it. Waste bags for the collection chamber are a separate consumable — intimus supplies PB7 bags for this machine — and the APU100 dust extraction system is a priced option, not included. Confirm site requirements with us before ordering.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

This is the machine for in-house destruction at scale: a commercial shredding operation, a records centre, a bank or insurer's central file destruction, a print house clearing overruns. The 330-sheet pass and conveyor feed mean a single operator can process archive boxes continuously, and P-3 is the level most commercial destruction contracts specify. The ability to swallow bound documents and ring binders whole removes the prep work that dominates labour cost on smaller machines.

Do not buy a 16.50 for an office, however busy. It is a 77 x 48 x 61 in three-phase industrial machine that needs freight delivery, a loading route and service clearance; a department shredding a few hundred sheets a day is served properly by the intimus 130 CP4 cabinet shredder at a small fraction of the cost. Do not buy it if you need the waste baled — the intimus 14.87 shredder-baler compacts output into 130–175 lb bales, which the 16.50 does not. And do not buy it for high-security work: neither cut configuration approaches P-5, let alone the NSA/CSS 02-01 standard, and classified material belongs on a listed machine such as the intimus 120 CP7.

One genuine internal trade-off: if raw volume matters more to you than security level, the 10 x 70 mm P-2 build of the same 16.50 is rated at up to 550 sheets a pass. That is a substantial throughput gain, but P-2 is a low security level suitable only for internal documents, and it will not satisfy a contract written to P-3.

Figures above come from intimus North America published model data and the intimus North America warranty policy. Rows intimus does not publish for this exact cut configuration have been omitted rather than estimated — ask us and we will get them confirmed by the factory before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P-3 enough for commercial document destruction contracts?

In most cases yes - P-3 is the level the majority of commercial records-destruction contracts and service agreements specify, and DIN 66399 defines it as appropriate for confidential internal data where unauthorised disclosure would have a considerable effect. It is not the right level for regulated personal data under a policy that names P-4 or P-5, and it is nowhere near sufficient for classified material. Read the contract you are servicing before assuming P-3 clears it.

How does this compare with the 10 x 70 mm version of the 16.50?

Same machine, different cutting head. This SKU cuts 6 x 50 mm at DIN P-3 and takes up to 330 sheets per pass at up to 1,050 lb per hour. The 655144 cuts 10 x 70 mm - 700 mm2, which puts it at P-2 - and intimus quotes up to 550 sheets per pass for it. The coarser head moves more paper; the finer head meets a higher standard. Choose on what your contracts and policies require, not on throughput alone.

Can it really take ring binders and bound documents?

Yes. intimus lists bound documents and ring binders among the materials the 16.50 handles, alongside paper, credit cards, ID badges, optical media and floppy disks. This is a meaningful operational advantage: on smaller machines, stripping binders and removing covers is often the single biggest labour item in a destruction workflow. It does not mean the machine is indifferent to what goes in - heavy metal beyond binder mechanisms will still damage cutters.

What supply and siting does the 16.50 need?

220 V, three-phase, 60 Hz for a 10 HP motor, and a footprint of 77 x 48 x 61 in plus clearance to load the conveyor and service the machine. There is no single-phase option. Because it arrives by freight and cannot be manoeuvred like an office cabinet, confirm the delivery route, door widths and floor loading before ordering. If your building has no three-phase service, budget for that work first - it commonly exceeds expectations.

Do I need the dust extraction option?

If the machine runs for extended periods in a space people occupy, yes, specify the APU100. High-volume paper destruction generates fine airborne dust that settles on everything nearby and is an irritant to operators. If the 16.50 is going into a dedicated destruction bay that is separately ventilated and lightly staffed, you can reasonably run without it. It is priced as an option rather than bundled, so decide before ordering rather than retrofitting.

How is waste collected, and what bags does it take?

Waste drops into a collection chamber of roughly 120 US gallons (about 454 litres) with a bin-full alarm and automatic shutoff so it cannot pack solid. intimus supplies PB7 waste bags for this machine, sold in packs as a consumable rather than included with the shredder. At full throughput the chamber fills quickly, so plan bag stock and a handling route for full bags as part of the installation rather than afterwards.

Does the automatic oiler mean no maintenance?

No, it means the most critical routine task is handled for you. The integrated oiler lubricates the cutting cylinders automatically, which protects the intimus industrial warranty - that policy states cross-cut machines require lubrication per the operator's manual and that failure to do so may void coverage. You still need to keep the oil reservoir filled, clear dust, inspect the conveyor and follow intimus's service schedule. An industrial shredder rewards a planned maintenance regime.

What warranty applies?

intimus North America covers industrial shredders with one year parts, 90 days labour and three years on the cutting cylinders. The cutting-cylinder term is the one that matters on a machine at this price, because cylinders are the expensive wear item. The coverage is conditional on lubrication being performed in accordance with the operator's manual, which is a further argument for the integrated automatic oiler doing that job rather than an operator.
