Authorized Dahle dealer New stock through the manufacturer's authorized channel, with the manufacturer's own warranty · what this covers

Description

The Dahle 52214 is the small machine in this line-up, and its headline is that it does not cut a small machine's corners on the shred: 20 sheets per pass at P-4, from a 53-pound cabinet that fits beside a desk. What you give up for that footprint is bin size, speed and warranty - an 11-gallon bin, 7 ft/min, and one year of coverage rather than the two years plus lifetime cylinders Dahle puts on its larger oil-free models. It is a personal and small-team shredder, not a scaled-down department machine.

Key Features

  • 20 sheets per pass at P-4. An unusually high pass rating for a machine this size, and the same 1/8" x 1 9/16" particle as Dahle's much larger office models.
  • 53 pounds and 14 x 16 inches on the floor. Small enough to live under or beside a desk rather than in a shared copy room.
  • Oil-free cutting head. No lubricant to buy and no oiling routine on a machine that will often be looked after by whoever sits nearest it.
  • SmartPower energy management. Powers down after 30 minutes of inactivity.
  • Automatic jam protection. Dahle's cylinder design reduces the misfeeds that are most common when a single user drops in a folded stack.
  • Thermally protected motor. Cuts out on overheat rather than running to failure.
  • O-3 rated for CDs, DVDs and credit cards. Staples and paper clips are also on Dahle's accepted-media list.

Figures above are as published by Dahle for this model. Dahle quotes sheet capacity under ideal conditions - new cutting cylinders, a cold motor and a supply at nominal voltage and frequency. Dahle does not publish a motor wattage, amperage or duty-cycle figure for this shredder.

What's in the Box

Dahle does not publish a full packing list for this model. What ships is the assembled shredder on its waste-bin cabinet with lockable casters, the power cord and the instruction manual.

  • Shred bags are not included. Dahle does not publish a shred bag part number matched to this bin size - check the fit before ordering in quantity.
  • No oil, oiling sheets or lubricant of any kind are required or supplied - this cutting head runs dry by design.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

The 52214 makes sense for one person or a team of two to four who shred steadily but not in bulk - a practice manager, a small finance team, a home office handling client records. The P-4 cut is the same one you get on machines three times the price, so you are not compromising on security to save space.

Be honest with yourself about the 11-gallon bin. On a machine rated for 20 sheets a pass, that bin fills quickly, and emptying is the task people put off. If more than two people will use it daily, step up to the Dahle 50414 - 30-gallon bin, 46 dB instead of 60, and a two-year warranty with lifetime cutting cylinders. The 52214 is also the noisiest and slowest machine here at 60 dB and 7 ft/min; if it will sit in a quiet room where people take calls, that matters more than the specification sheet suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the warranty shorter than on the other Dahle shredders?

Dahle publishes a one-year warranty on the 52214, against two years plus lifetime cutting-cylinder coverage on the 504xx and 505xx oil-free machines. That reflects the class of the machine rather than a defect - it is a compact unit built for lighter duty. If long-term cylinder coverage is part of your purchasing criteria, the 50414 is the cheapest model here that carries the lifetime cylinder warranty.

Is the 11-gallon bin a problem?

It is the main constraint on this machine. Eleven gallons against 30 on the 50414 means roughly a third of the run time between empties, on a shredder rated for nearly as many sheets per pass. For one person clearing a folder a day it is fine. For a team of four purging files it will need emptying daily. Dahle does not publish a shred bag part number sized for this bin - check the fit before ordering bags in quantity.

How slow is 7 ft/min really?

It is the slowest machine in this range - Dahle rates the office models at 18-20 ft/min and the department models at 16-20. On a single 20-sheet pass the difference is a few seconds. Over a 500-page purge it is meaningful. The 52214 is designed for regular small feeds rather than sustained batch work, and the pace is consistent with that.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards and staples?

Yes. Dahle rates the 52214 P-4 for paper and O-3 for optical media and lists CDs, DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips. Feed discs one at a time, and expect the machine to be noticeably louder on optical media than on paper.

Is it quiet enough for a shared office?

At 60 dB it is the loudest machine in this comparison - about the level of ordinary conversation, and clearly audible across a room. If it will sit in an open-plan area where people take calls, the 46 dB Dahle 50414 or CleanTEC 51314 are much better neighbours. In a private office with the door shut, 60 dB is unremarkable.

Does it need oil?

No. The cutting head runs dry by design, so there is no oil to buy, no oiling sheets to feed through and no lubrication schedule to forget. Empty the bin regularly and keep the feed slot free of accumulated staples and paper dust; that is the whole maintenance routine. On a machine likely to be looked after by whoever sits nearest it rather than by a facilities team, removing the oiling step is worth more than it looks on paper.
