It shares its cabinet, filter and 30-gallon bin with the P-5 51472, but gives up particle size in exchange for half again as much throughput.

What Oil-Free Changes About Ownership

The oil-free cutting head is the reason to prefer the 51464 over the P-5 machines in the same cabinet, and it is worth being precise about why. On a conventional shredder, lubrication is the maintenance step everyone agrees is important and nobody performs; cylinders run dry, friction rises, throughput drops, and the machine eventually stalls under a load it used to manage. Dahle's answer on its P-5 models is to automate the job with the EvenFlow Lubricator. Its answer here is to remove the job. Neither approach is wrong, but they produce different ownership profiles: the 51464 has no oil on its parts list at all, leaving the CleanTEC air filter (item 20710) and waste bags (item 20725) as the only recurring items. In a department where no single person owns the shredder, that difference is what determines whether the machine is still working in five years.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

The 51464 suits a department that shreds steadily: accounts payable clearing remittance advices, a clinic disposing of daily paperwork, a law office emptying closed-matter files. P-4 is the level most commercial confidentiality policies and general GDPR-style guidance land on, and 24 sheets a pass means the machine is not the bottleneck in the room.

It is the wrong machine if your policy specifies P-5. Human-resources records, patient identifiers and financial account data are frequently required to go finer, and the 51472 is the same cabinet at P-5 — you will drop to 16 sheets a pass and gain an automatic oiler, since the finer cylinders are not oil-free. It is also wrong if the machine will serve a whole floor: a 30-gallon bin fills quickly at 24 sheets a pass, and the 51514 gives you 38 gallons and 26 sheets in a wider cabinet for the same security level.
