Description

The Dahle CleanTEC 51422 is a P-5 office shredder whose defining feature is not the cut — it is the air. An internal filter traps up to 98% of the fine paper dust a shredder normally blows back into the room, which is the reason to choose this machine over a conventional cabinet shredder sitting in the same corridor. Within the CleanTEC office line the 51422 is the narrow-throat, high-security option: a 10.25-inch feed opening and a 13-sheet pass, traded for a particle small enough to satisfy DIN 66399 P-5.

Key Features

  • CleanTEC fine dust filtration. The integrated filter (replacement item 20710) captures up to 98% of airborne fine dust. Worth having where the shredder shares a room with desks rather than a copier alcove.
  • EvenFlow Lubricator. An automatic oiler feeds a slow, continuous film of oil across the full width of the cutting cylinders. Nobody has to remember to run an oil sheet — which matters on a P-5 machine, where under-oiled cylinders are the usual cause of early failure.
  • Trident Grip jam protection. The cylinder geometry makes three continuous points of contact with the sheet and pulls it straight through instead of letting it skew and bunch.
  • Matrix High Performance cutting cylinders with a lifetime warranty against defects, backed by a 2-year warranty on the machine.
  • SmartPower energy management powers the unit down after a period of inactivity, so it is not drawing standby current overnight.
  • Chain-driven continuous-duty motor, thermally protected, on rubber shock mounts. Rated at 53 dB and 18 ft/min.
  • Auto start/stop and bin-full shutoff, on a 30-gallon pull-out bin with lockable casters.

Sheet capacity is quoted on 8.5 x 11 in paper, per Dahle's own convention of rating at both #20 and #16 bond. Dahle's US literature describes the 1/13" x 9/16" particle as cross-cut; measured against DIN 66399 the particle works out at roughly 2 x 15 mm, about 28 mm², which sits inside the P-5 ceiling of 30 mm² and is what most buyers would call a micro-cut.

What's in the Box

The shredder ships assembled on its cabinet with casters fitted and the CleanTEC filter installed. Waste bags are not included — order Dahle item 20725 (fits 20–30 gallon bins, 100 per box). Replacement air filters are item 20710. The automatic oiler is filled at the factory; refills are Dahle 20721 (12 oz) or 20722 (1 gallon).

Running Costs and Consumables

A CleanTEC is not a maintenance-free machine, and it is fairer to say so up front. Three things get consumed over its life. The CleanTEC air filter, item 20710, loads up with the dust it captures and eventually needs replacing; how often depends entirely on how much paper passes through, and Dahle does not publish a fixed interval, so judge it by airflow and by how much dust escapes at the outlet. Shredder oil for the EvenFlow Lubricator is item 20721 in a 12 oz bottle or 20722 by the gallon; check the reservoir monthly. Waste bags are item 20725 for the 30-gallon bin, sold 100 to a box. Against that, the cutting cylinders carry a lifetime warranty and the machine two years, so the recurring cost is genuinely small — but it is not zero, and if you want a shredder with no consumables at all you are looking at the PaperSAFE range instead, at much lower capacity and without the dust filter.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 51422 if a small team handles genuinely sensitive paper — HR files, medical records, client financials — and the machine has to live in occupied office space where dust is a nuisance or a complaint waiting to happen. Thirteen sheets per pass is honest workgroup throughput for three to five people, not a mailroom rate.

Do not buy it if you shred high volume at ordinary confidentiality. The 51414 shares this exact cabinet and filter but runs P-4 at 18 sheets, and it will clear a stack noticeably faster. Do not buy it if you need to destroy CDs or DVDs: Dahle does not list optical media among the materials this model accepts, and the 51472 is the CD-rated P-5 in the office range. And if anyone in your building feeds 11 x 17 tabloid, skip this one — the 10.25-inch throat will not take it, while the 51472 and 51522 will at 12 inches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the 51422 shred staples and paper clips?

Yes. Dahle rates the 51422 for paper, staples, paper clips and credit cards, so you do not have to de-staple files before shredding. Standard office staples and small to medium binder clips pass through the Matrix cutting cylinders without special handling. Very heavy-duty fasteners, ring binders and laminated pouches are outside the rating and should be removed. Feeding metal is what wears cylinders fastest on any shredder, so if you are destroying archive boxes that are heavily stapled, expect the automatic oiler to be doing real work.

Will this model shred CDs or DVDs?

No. Dahle publishes an optical-media rating only for the CleanTEC models that are built for it, and the 51422 is not one of them; its listed materials are paper, staples, paper clips and credit cards. If you need to destroy discs on the same machine, the CleanTEC 51472 is the P-5 office model rated O-4 for optical media, and the 51522 and 51572 carry the same O-4 rating in the department range. Feeding a disc into a machine not rated for it risks cylinder damage that the warranty will not cover.

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

Legal, yes. Legal paper is 8.5 inches wide and simply runs longer through a 10.25-inch throat, so it feeds normally. Tabloid, no. An 11 x 17 sheet is 11 inches across and will not enter a 10.25-inch opening unless you fold it, which costs you sheet capacity and is not something Dahle recommends. If tabloid is a regular part of your workflow, the 51472 or 51522 give you a 12-inch throat and the 51564 and 51572 give you 16 inches.

How often will the 30-gallon bin need emptying?

It depends entirely on how fine the cut is and how much air is in the waste. A P-5 particle packs more densely than a P-4 strip, so a 30-gallon bin on this machine typically absorbs several thousand sheets before the bin-full sensor stops the unit. For a three-to-five person workgroup shredding daily paperwork rather than clearing archives, emptying once or twice a week is a reasonable planning assumption. Clearing out old storage boxes will fill it in an afternoon.

What waste bags fit the 51422?

Dahle item 20725, sized for 20 to 30 gallon bins and supplied 100 to a box. Bags are not included with the shredder. A generic 30-gallon liner will physically fit, but the Dahle bag is cut to sit correctly over the bin lip so the bin-full sensor reads accurately and the bag does not collapse into the cutting head. If you are ordering consumables anyway, the CleanTEC air filter is item 20710 and the oiler refill is item 20721.

Is the 51422 NSA approved?

No, and any claim otherwise should be treated with suspicion. NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 mm x 5 mm and inclusion on the NSA Evaluated Products List. The 51422 produces a 1/13" x 9/16" particle, which is DIN 66399 P-5 — a strong commercial security level, appropriate for HR, legal, medical and financial records, but well outside the NSA requirement. For classified US government material you need a machine on the current NSA EPL, which is a different and considerably more expensive class of shredder.

Do I have to oil this shredder myself?

No. The EvenFlow Lubricator applies oil continuously across the cutting cylinders while the machine runs, so there is no oil sheet to feed and no manual routine to schedule. Your only maintenance task is topping up the reservoir when it runs low, using Dahle shredder oil (item 20721 in a 12 oz bottle or 20722 by the gallon). Do not substitute aerosol lubricants or vegetable oil; they gum the cylinders. The other recurring consumable is the CleanTEC air filter, item 20710.

How loud is it in an open-plan office?

Dahle rates the 51422 at 53 dB, which is quiet for a cabinet shredder of this class — roughly the level of ordinary conversation at a few feet, and appreciably quieter than a deskside unit like the PaperSAFE PS 100 at 70 dB. Rubber shock mounts and the chain-driven motor keep vibration out of the floor. In practice a colleague on a phone call ten feet away will hear it running but should still be able to hold the call.
