Description

The Dahle CleanTEC 51414 is the 51314 scaled up for a busier office: same oil-free cutting head, same 98% fine dust filtration, but 18 sheets per pass instead of 16 and a 30-gallon bin instead of 23. It is the largest oil-free machine in Dahle's CleanTEC range, and the one to specify when a three-to-five person team needs P-4 shredding without either a lubrication routine or the paper dust that comes with a conventional shredder in a closed room.

Key Features

  • CleanTEC fine dust filtration. Dahle states up to 98% of harmful fine dust is captured at the cutting head. Replacement filter is Dahle item #20710.
  • Oil-free cutting head. No lubricant to buy and no oiling schedule, on the only 30-gallon machine in the CleanTEC range.
  • 18 sheets per pass at 20 lb bond. Two more than the 51314, and the same rating as the non-filtered Dahle 50414.
  • 30-gallon waste bin on lockable casters. Seven gallons more than the 51314, which is the difference between emptying twice a week and once.
  • P-4 cross-cut at 1/8" x 1 9/16". Within the 160 mm² DIN 66399 limit for P-4.
  • O-3 rated for optical media. CDs, DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips are all accepted, unlike the P-5 51322 in the same range.
  • SmartPower energy management. Automatic power-down after 30 minutes of inactivity, plus bin-full auto-off and automatic jam protection.

Figures above are as published by Dahle for this model. Dahle quotes sheet capacity under ideal conditions - new cutting cylinders, a cold motor and a supply at nominal voltage and frequency. Dahle does not publish a motor wattage, amperage or duty-cycle figure for this shredder.

What's in the Box

Dahle does not publish a full packing list for this model. What ships is the assembled shredder on its waste-bin cabinet with lockable casters, the power cord and the instruction manual.

  • Shred bags are not included. The 30 gallons bin takes Dahle shred bags item #20725, sold separately in boxes of 100.
  • The CleanTEC dust filter is fitted at the factory. Replacements are a separate consumable (item #20710).
  • No oil, oiling sheets or lubricant of any kind are required or supplied - this cutting head runs dry by design.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Specify the 51414 for a three-to-five person department where the shredder shares the room with the people using it: medical practices, small law firms, HR functions, anywhere paper dust is a live complaint rather than a theoretical one. It gives you the throughput of Dahle's mainstream 50414 office machine with the dust filtration added.

If dust is not your problem, the Dahle 50414 is the same 18 sheets and the same 30-gallon bin, quieter at 46 dB rather than 52, cheaper, and carries Dahle's published lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty. That is the honest comparison and for many buyers it is the better purchase. If your office is smaller, the CleanTEC 51314 does the same job at 16 sheets and 23 gallons, at 46 dB. If your policy needs P-5, the CleanTEC 51322 is the option - but it drops to 12 sheets and it will not take CDs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the practical difference between this and the Dahle 50414?

The dust filter, and that is essentially it. Both are oil-free P-4 machines with 18-sheet ratings, 10.25-inch throats and 30-gallon bins. The 50414 is quieter on Dahle's published figures - 46 dB against 52 - and its spec sheet lists lifetime cutting-cylinder coverage where the 51414's published warranty is two years. Buy the 51414 if airborne paper dust in the room is a genuine concern; buy the 50414 if it is not.

How often should the CleanTEC filter be replaced?

Dahle does not publish a fixed interval, because it depends entirely on throughput. The replacement part is Dahle item #20710. A practical routine is to inspect it every time you change the shred bag and replace it when it is visibly loaded with dust. A clogged filter restricts airflow, so the machine has to work harder and the filtration benefit disappears.

Does it need oil?

No. The 51414 uses Dahle's oil-free cutting head. Only two models in the CleanTEC range do - this one and the 51314. The 51322 and the P-7 41000 series all use an automatic oiler and need shredder oil as a consumable.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips?

Yes to all four. Dahle rates the 51414 P-4 for paper and O-3 for optical media. Feed discs singly rather than mixing them into a stack of paper - a disc shatters instead of shearing, and the fragments are what cause jams.

How many people can share it?

Dahle positions it for three to five users. At 18 sheets per pass and 18 ft/min it handles a normal working day for that group. Above five regular users the queue rather than the machine becomes the problem, and a department-class shredder such as the Dahle 50514 makes more sense - though you would lose the dust filtration, which Dahle does not offer on the 505xx line.

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

Legal yes, tabloid no. The feed opening is 10.25 inches, which takes letter and legal fed short-edge first with room to spare. Eleven-inch tabloid has to be folded, and folding doubles the effective thickness, so an 18-sheet pass rating becomes nine folded sheets. There is no wider-throat model in the oil-free CleanTEC line; if you need both a 12-inch throat and dust filtration, the high-security CleanTEC 41534 is the only Dahle machine that offers the combination.

What bags does it take, and are they included?

Dahle shred bags item #20725, covering 20-30 gallon bins and supplied 100 to a box. They are not included with the shredder - budget for them separately as an ongoing consumable. The same bag fits the CleanTEC 51314 and 51322 and Dahle's 30-gallon 504xx office models, so a mixed fleet needs only one bag part number on the supply order. Generic liners will fit the bin but are not profiled to it and tend to slide down the sides.
