The Dahle CleanTEC 51414 is an oil-free P-4 cross-cut office shredder with a built-in filter that Dahle says captures up to 98% of fine paper dust. It cuts 1/8" x 1 9/16" particles, takes 18 sheets of 20 lb bond per pass and feeds a 30-gallon bin. It is meant for a team of three to five people who share the room with the shredder, such as a medical practice, HR office or small law firm, and who want neither an oiling routine nor paper dust in the air.

Where the 51414's dust filter earns its place

A conventional cabinet shredder blows fine paper particles back out with the waste, and in a closed office that dust settles on desks and gets into the air people breathe. The CleanTEC filter captures it at the cutting head. When a shredder sits in a copy alcove down the hall, this is a minor benefit. When it sits a few feet from a reception desk or an exam room, it is the main reason to buy this model over Dahle's unfiltered 50414. The filter is the one routine consumable you will replace on this machine. Dahle sets no fixed interval, so check it each time you change the bag and swap it once it is visibly loaded, because a clogged filter restricts airflow.

Security, materials and everyday handling

The 1/8" x 1 9/16" particle is well within the 160 mm² ceiling DIN 66399 allows at P-4, which is the level most internal policies set for records containing names and account details. You can feed stapled sets, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and DVDs, and the machine carries an O-3 rating for discs. Feed discs one at a time rather than buried in a paper stack, because they shatter rather than shear.

Automatic jam protection backs out an overfeed. A bin-full sensor switches the motor off before the waste packs against the cutters, and SmartPower powers the unit down after 30 minutes of inactivity.

51414 or a sibling?

• Dahle 50414: the same 18 sheets and 30-gallon bin without the filter. It is quieter at 46 dB, and its spec sheet lists lifetime cutting-cylinder coverage.
• CleanTEC 51314: the smaller filtered P-4 model, with 16 sheets, a 23-gallon bin and a 46 dB rating.
• CleanTEC 51422: the same cabinet and filter at P-5 with an automatic oiler, taking 13 sheets and not rated for CDs.

Is the 51414 the right buy?

Choose it when paper dust is a real complaint in an occupied room and your policy calls for P-4. If dust is not a concern, the 50414 is quieter and comes with longer cylinder cover. If your policy requires P-5, move to the 51422. Tabloid paper will not pass through the 10.25-inch opening without folding.
