Why a P-5 cut matters, and what it costs you

DIN 66399 limits a P-5 particle to 30 mm². At around 27 mm², the 51322 qualifies, and its particles are far smaller than the 160 mm² ceiling that applies to P-4 machines. That is the level contracts and data protection assessments in legal, medical and financial work often specify. Dahle calls the cut cross-cut in some material and micro-cut in its product data; the DIN level is what counts, and it is P-5 either way. The trade-off is pace: the identical cabinet fitted with the P-4 head (the CleanTEC 51314) takes 16 sheets, while this one takes 12.

Oiler and filter: how the 51322 looks after itself

Fine cutting cylinders need regular lubrication to hold their capacity. The EvenFlow Lubricator feeds Dahle shredder oil to the cylinders automatically, so nobody has to remember oiling sheets, though the reservoir does need topping up. Finer cuts also release more airborne particulate, which is where the CleanTEC filter earns its place: it captures up to 98% of fine dust at the source. The motor is thermally protected, and jam protection helps when someone overfeeds the throat.

Media, bin and placement

Dahle lists paper, staples, paper clips and credit cards for the 51322. It carries no optical media rating, so CDs and DVDs need another machine. Small particles pack tightly, so the 23-gallon bin holds more paper by weight than the same bin on a coarser cut. It takes Dahle #20725 bags, sold separately in boxes of 100. The cabinet weighs 95 lb and rolls on lockable casters.
