Description

The Dahle CleanTEC 51322 is the only P-5 machine in this range, and the only one here that trades sheet capacity for a genuinely finer particle. Its 1/13" x 9/16" cut works out to roughly 1.9 x 14 mm - around 27 mm², inside the 30 mm² ceiling DIN 66399 sets for P-5. Twelve sheets per pass, 46 dB, a fine dust filter and an automatic oiler, in the same compact cabinet as the P-4 51314. If your destruction standard specifies P-5 rather than P-4, this is the small-office answer.

Key Features

  • DIN 66399 P-5 at roughly 1.9 x 14 mm. About 27 mm² per particle. Dahle labels the machine cross-cut; by DIN particle area it falls in the micro-cut band.
  • Automatic EvenFlow Lubricator. Applies slow, continuous oil to the cutting cylinders. A P-5 head needs lubrication, and automating it removes the maintenance step people forget.
  • CleanTEC fine dust filtration. Dahle states up to 98% of fine dust is trapped at source - more relevant here than on a cross-cut machine, because finer cutting generates more airborne particulate.
  • 46 dB operating noise. The quietest reading in this comparison, shared with the 51314.
  • 23-gallon bin with bin-full auto-off. Fine particles pack densely, so this bin runs longer on a P-5 cut than the same volume would on a P-4 machine.
  • Thermally protected motor and automatic jam protection. The motor shuts down rather than overheating; the cylinder design resists the misfeeds a 12-sheet stack can cause.
  • Two-year warranty with lifetime cutting cylinders. Dahle's published spec sheet for the 51322 lists two years on the shredder and lifetime coverage on the cylinders.

Figures above are as published by Dahle for this model. Dahle quotes sheet capacity under ideal conditions - new cutting cylinders, a cold motor and a supply at nominal voltage and frequency. Dahle does not publish a motor wattage, amperage or duty-cycle figure for this shredder.

What's in the Box

Dahle does not publish a full packing list for this model. What ships is the assembled shredder on its waste-bin cabinet with lockable casters, the power cord and the instruction manual.

  • Shred bags are not included. The 23 gallons bin takes Dahle shred bags item #20725, sold separately in boxes of 100.
  • The CleanTEC dust filter is fitted at the factory. Replacements are a separate consumable.
  • The EvenFlow Lubricator requires Dahle shredder oil, which is an ongoing consumable and is not supplied in quantity with the machine.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 51322 when a written policy, a client contract or a data protection assessment specifically calls for P-5. That is common in legal practices, medical records handling, financial advisory work and anywhere a supplier's destruction standard has been imposed on you. In a two-to-four person office it is quiet, it filters its own dust, and it oils itself.

Do not buy it to be cautious. Twelve sheets per pass against 16 on the P-4 CleanTEC 51314 - the same cabinet, same bin, same noise level - is a 25% reduction in working pace for a security step most organisations do not require. Note too that unlike almost every other machine in this range, the 51322 is not rated for CDs or DVDs: Dahle lists paper, staples, paper clips and credit cards only. If you destroy optical media, this is the wrong machine and the 51314 or 51414 is the right one. And it is not oil-free - the auto-oiler removes the labour but not the consumable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it shred CDs or DVDs?

No. This is the important limitation on the 51322. Dahle lists paper, staples, paper clips and credit cards for this model and publishes no optical-media rating for it, unlike the P-4 CleanTEC 51314 and 51414 which are both rated O-3. If discs are part of what you destroy, choose one of those instead, or plan a separate route for optical media.

How much finer is P-5 than P-4 in practice?

Substantially. DIN 66399 allows up to 160 mm² per particle at P-4 and up to 30 mm² at P-5 - roughly a five-fold reduction. Dahle's P-4 machines cut about 1/8" x 1 9/16"; the 51322 cuts about 1/13" x 9/16", or roughly 1.9 x 14 mm. Whether that difference is required is a policy question, not a technical one, and most commercial destruction standards stop at P-4.

Does the automatic oiler mean I never touch it?

It means you never have to run oiling sheets or squeeze oil into the throat. You do have to keep it topped up with Dahle shredder oil, which is an ongoing consumable. Use Dahle's own oil - aerosols and general-purpose lubricants can leave a residue that binds paper dust to the cylinders, which is the opposite of what you want on a fine cut.

Why is it labelled cross-cut when P-5 is usually called micro-cut?

Manufacturers use the marketing terms loosely; DIN 66399 does not define them at all. Dahle calls the 51322 a cross-cut machine. By particle area - about 27 mm², under the 30 mm² P-5 limit - it sits in what the industry generally calls micro-cut. The DIN level is the specification that matters and it is P-5 either way.

Is twelve sheets going to be frustrating?

It depends on your volume. Dahle publishes 12 sheets on 20 lb bond and 14 on lighter stock, at 18 ft/min. For a small office destroying a folder or two a day, it is unnoticeable. For anyone clearing archives, the drop from the 16 sheets of the P-4 51314 in the identical cabinet becomes obvious quickly. Size the machine on your realistic daily volume, not on the worst week of the year.

How long does a 23-gallon bin last on a P-5 cut?

Longer than the same bin on a coarser machine. P-5 particles trap less air and pack more densely, so a given bin volume holds more paper by weight. Dahle publishes volume rather than a sheet count. Bags are Dahle #20725, covering 20-30 gallon bins, sold 100 per box and not included with the machine.

Does the dust filter need replacing?

Yes, it is a consumable. Dahle does not publish a replacement interval for the 51322 - it depends on throughput. Inspect it when you change the bag and replace it when it is visibly loaded. Running a fine-cut machine with a clogged filter puts the dust back into the room, which defeats the point of buying a CleanTEC model.
