Instead of stacking stamped discs, Dahle mills the 50514's cutting cylinders from solid stock. That construction is what lets the same head take CDs and DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips without a separate media slot. The cylinders run dry, so there is nothing to oil.

Power reaches the cylinders through a chain rather than a belt or plain gear train, which avoids slip under load, and the motor is rated for continuous duty with thermal protection. Dahle runs the 50514 at 16 ft/min: slower than some office models, but the gearing favors pulling a 26-sheet stack over sprinting through a thin one.

Practical notes for owning the 50514

Nothing is consumed except bags. The 38-gallon drawer takes Dahle 20726 bags, sold in boxes of 100 and not supplied with the machine. Empty the bin before shred packs up against the cutters.

Delivery needs planning. The cabinet is 20 in deep, 29 in wide and 34.5 in tall and weighs 141 lb, so two people should handle it off the pallet. After that it rolls on lockable casters. It runs on a standard 115 V / 60 Hz supply; Dahle does not publish amperage or wattage, so check the rating plate if several machines will share a circuit.
