The Dahle 50464 is the throughput model of Dahle's 30-gallon oil-free office line: 24 sheets per pass through a 12-inch throat, against 18 sheets and 10.25 inches on the otherwise identical 50414. You pay for that in noise - 52 dB rather than 46 - and in 24 pounds of extra machine. For an office that shreds in batches rather than a sheet at a time, and that regularly has to deal with paper wider than legal, it is the better-matched machine.

What's in the Box

Dahle does not publish a full packing list for this model. What ships is the assembled shredder on its waste-bin cabinet with lockable casters, the power cord and the instruction manual.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Choose the 50464 if the shredder is fed in batches - end-of-project file clear-outs, records retention purges, a shared machine that people visit with an armful rather than a page. The 12-inch throat also matters more often than buyers expect: engineering drawings, spreadsheets printed on tabloid and folded brochures all stop being a problem.

It is the wrong machine if the shredder sits three feet from someone's desk. At 52 dB and 119 pounds it is a corridor or copy-room machine, and the Dahle 50414 does the same P-4 job at 46 dB for a quieter room. If you need still more - a bigger bin rather than a wider throat - the Dahle 50514 gives you 26 sheets and 38 gallons, and the 50564 gives you a 16-inch throat and 45 gallons. If dust is the concern rather than volume, the CleanTEC line adds a fine-particulate filter that this model does not have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 11 x 17 tabloid really fit?

Yes. The feed opening is 12 inches, so tabloid at 11 inches wide goes in flat with an inch to spare. That is the single functional reason to choose this model over the 50414. Anything wider than 12 inches - an architectural D-size sheet, for example - still has to be folded, or moved to the 16-inch 50564.

Is 24 sheets a realistic number?

It is Dahle's rating on 20 lb bond under ideal conditions: new cutting cylinders, a cold motor and nominal supply voltage. Dahle also publishes 26 sheets on lighter 16 lb stock. In daily use, folded sheets, staples and warm cylinders bring the practical figure down. Feeding 16-18 sheets at a time will keep this machine running without ever tripping the jam protection.

Why is it heavier than the 50414 if the bin is the same size?

The extra 24 pounds is in the cutting head and drive, not the cabinet. A 12-inch cutting cylinder set rated for 24 sheets is physically larger and driven harder than the 10.25-inch set in the 50414, and Dahle uses a chain drive here. Both machines use the same 30-gallon bin and the same #20725 shred bag.

Does it shred CDs, credit cards and staples?

Yes - Dahle lists CDs/DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips among the accepted media and rates the 50464 O-3 for optical media alongside its P-4 paper rating. Stapled files can go in as they are. Feed discs individually rather than mixing them into a paper stack: a disc shatters rather than shearing, and loose fragments in a stack are a common cause of jams. Binder clips, ring binders and laminated sheets should be removed.

What is the difference between this and the Dahle 50514?

The 50514 is the next class up: 26 sheets per pass, a 38-gallon bin instead of 30, and a larger cabinet at 141 pounds. Both have a 12-inch throat and both are P-4. The 50514 runs slightly slower at 16 ft/min against 20, because it is geared to pull thicker stacks. If your constraint is bin-emptying frequency, go to the 50514; if it is throat width, this machine already solves it.

What bags fit and how many come in a box?

Dahle shred bags item #20725, covering 20-30 gallon bins and supplied 100 to a box. They are not included with the shredder - budget for them as a separate supply line. The Dahle 50414 and the CleanTEC 51414 use the same bag, so a mixed fleet of those three models needs only one part number on the order. A generic 30-gallon liner will fit physically but is not profiled to the bin and tends to slip.

Is there any routine maintenance?

No oiling - the cutting head runs dry by design. Empty the bin before the particles compact against the cylinders, and keep the feed slot clear. The motor is thermally protected, so if it is worked hard enough to overheat it will shut down and restart once it has cooled rather than damaging itself.
