The Dahle 50314 is an oil-free P-4 cross-cut shredder for small offices that handle personal and client data. It cuts 1/8" x 1 9/16" particles (approx. 3.2 x 39.7 mm), takes 16 sheets of #20 bond at a time and drops the waste into a 23-gallon bin at 46 dB. For two to four users it is the middle ground in Dahle's 23-gallon range: finer than the P-3 50310, faster than the P-6 40330.

The security level most offices are asked for

Privacy policies and client contracts most often name P-4, and the 50314 meets it with room to spare: DIN 66399 sets the P-4 ceiling at 160 mm², and this cut produces about 127 mm². That covers payroll, HR files, customer records and bank statements. It does not cover policies that call for P-5 or higher, and it is not an NSA-listed machine, so classified paper needs a P-7 model such as the Dahle 40334.

One slot for paper, cards and discs

Because the 50314 carries an O-3 rating for optical media, expired cards and old backup CDs go through the same throat as letters, with no second device needed. Insert discs and cards singly. Staples and paper clips do not need removing first, and the cylinders are covered for life if something hard does get through.

Maintenance on an oil-free cabinet

There is no oil bottle, oiling sheet or reservoir in the routine; Dahle's 20721 and 20722 oils are not meant for this machine. In practice upkeep means changing the bag. Dahle 20725 bags (100 per box) fit the 23-gallon bin and are not included. Jam protection reverses an overfeed automatically, and SmartPower takes the 50314 into standby, then off after 30 minutes unused. At 89 lb it is a little lighter than the otherwise similar 50310. The 10.25 inch throat accepts letter-size sheets unfolded but not legal or tabloid.

How the 50314 compares

• Dahle 50310: same oil-free cabinet and 46 dB, but a coarser P-3 cut (about 189 mm²) in exchange for 20 sheets per pass.
• Dahle CleanTEC 51314: the same P-4 cut and 16-sheet rating with Dahle's fine dust filter built in, for rooms where paper dust is a concern.
• Dahle 50414: P-4 for three to five users, with 18 sheets and a 30-gallon bin.

Should you buy the 50314?

Buy it if you want a single P-4 machine for a small team, with no oiling and with discs and cards handled in the same slot. Look at larger cabinets if you shred by the box every day, at a 12 or 16 inch throat if legal paper is routine, and at P-5 or higher models if your policy names them.
