Description

For most small offices the Dahle 50314 is the sensible default in this range. It meets DIN 66399 P-4 - the level most privacy policies and client contracts actually ask for - it takes 16 sheets a pass, it shreds CDs and cards as well as paper, and it never needs oiling. Set against its oil-free sibling the 50310, the difference is a single step in security: the same cabinet, the same 46 dB, the same 23-gallon bin, four fewer sheets per pass, and a particle a third the size.

Key Features

  • P-4 at roughly 127 mm2. The 1/8" x 1 9/16" cut works out to about 127 mm2, inside DIN 66399's 160 mm2 limit for P-4. This is the level commonly specified for confidential business records and personal data.
  • Oil-free operation. No lubricant bottles, no oiler reservoir, no maintenance routine. Dahle states the machine maintains performance without it.
  • 16 sheets a pass. 16 sheets of #20 bond, 18 of #16 - four fewer than the P-3 50310 in the same cabinet, but well ahead of anything at a higher security level in this size.
  • 46 dB. Tied with the 50310 as the quietest machine in this range, and quiet enough to live in an occupied office.
  • Shreds CDs, DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips. Rated for all of them, so old backup discs and expired cards do not need a second machine or an outside service.
  • Automatic jam protection. Overfeed detection with auto-reverse.
  • SmartPower energy management. SmartPower energy management drops the machine into standby and powers it down after 30 minutes of inactivity, so it is not drawing current overnight.
  • Lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty. Two years on the machine and life on the cutting cylinders, which Dahle offers on its P-3 to P-5 models.

Dahle does not publish motor wattage, current draw or a rated continuous duty cycle for this model, so those figures are deliberately omitted rather than estimated.

What's in the Box

Dahle publishes no full carton packing list for the 50314. What arrives is the shredder on its 23-gallon cabinet with the power cord. Shred bags are not included - order Dahle 20725 (20-30 gallon shredders, 100 per box). No oil is needed or wanted: this is an oil-free machine, so Dahle's 20721 and 20722 lubricants do not apply to it.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 50314 if you want one shredder for a small office and you would rather not think about it again. P-4 satisfies the great majority of commercial confidentiality and personal-data requirements, 16 sheets a pass is enough for two to four people, CDs and cards go in the same slot as paper, and there is nothing to lubricate. At 89 lb it is the lightest cabinet machine here.

Do not buy it if a policy names P-5 or higher. A 127 mm2 particle is P-4 and nothing more; for P-5 you are looking at the Dahle 20392, and for P-6 in a cabinet this size at the Dahle 40330 - which takes six sheets a pass and does not shred CDs. Do not buy it if you shred by the box: 16 sheets into 23 gallons is a small-office rating, and a department needs a 30-gallon or 38-gallon cabinet. And do not buy it if legal or tabloid paper is routine - the 10.25-inch throat will not take either unfolded. If your material is genuinely low-sensitivity and volume matters more than particle size, the Dahle 50310 is the same machine at P-3 with 20 sheets a pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is P-4 enough for personal data and confidential records?

For most organisations, yes. DIN 66399 P-4 caps particle area at 160 mm2 and the 50314 produces about 127 mm2, so it sits comfortably inside the class. P-4 is the level normally specified for confidential business records and personal data, and it is what most client confidentiality clauses expect. If your own policy, a regulator or a contract names P-5 or above, this machine does not meet it - check before you buy rather than after.

Do I ever need to oil it?

No, and you should not. The 50314 is an oil-free design; Dahle states it maintains peak performance without lubrication maintenance. Adding shredder oil, or running oiled lubricant sheets through it, is not part of the intended maintenance and in the case of sheets can leave paper residue in the cutting head. Emptying the bin before it overflows is essentially the whole maintenance routine.

Can it shred CDs, DVDs and credit cards?

Yes. Dahle rates the 50314 for CDs and DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips in addition to paper, so you do not need a second device for media destruction. Feed discs and cards individually rather than stacked. Note that this is a DIN O-3 rating for optical media, which is appropriate for routine disposal but not for classified media - that requires an NSA-listed optical destroyer.

How does it compare with the 50310?

Same cabinet, same 23-gallon bin, same 10.25-inch throat, same 46 dB, both oil-free, both rated for CDs and cards. The 50310 is P-3 with a roughly 189 mm2 particle and takes 20 sheets a pass at 95 lb. The 50314 is P-4 at about 127 mm2 and takes 16 sheets at 89 lb. You give up four sheets per pass and gain a materially smaller particle. For most buyers the 50314 is the right side of that trade.

Will legal-size or tabloid paper go through?

Not unfolded. The throat is 10.25 inches, which suits letter paper fed long-edge first. Legal (8.5 x 14) and tabloid (11 x 17) sheets need folding, and a folded sheet counts as two against the 16-sheet capacity. If legal paper is a regular part of your workload, Dahle's 12-inch and 16-inch throat cabinets are the better specification.

What bags does it take, and are they included?

It takes Dahle 20725 shred bags, rated for 20-30 gallon shredders and sold 100 to a box. None are supplied with the shredder. They are 1.5 mil gusseted plastic bags that open out to fill the cabinet. A generic bin liner of similar size will fit but is more likely to split when a full bag of cross-cut waste is lifted out.

Is this shredder NSA approved?

No. The 50314 is a P-4 cross-cut office machine and does not appear on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum particle of 1 mm x 5 mm plus the specific model being listed, and a P-4 cut is far outside that. If you need NSA-listed destruction, Dahle's EPL-listed models are the 40334, 40434, 20394 and the portable 20434DS.
