Description

The Dahle 50310 removes the job nobody in an office actually does: oiling the shredder. It is an oil-free machine, which means no lubricant sheets, no squeeze bottles and no automatic oiler reservoir to refill - and at 46 dB it is the quietest shredder in this group. The trade is security level. At DIN 66399 P-3 it produces a roughly 4.8 x 39.7 mm particle, which is appropriate for general internal paper but not for regulated or high-value confidential material.

Key Features

  • Genuinely oil-free. No lubrication routine at all. Dahle states the machine 'maintains peak performance without maintenance' in this respect, which removes both a recurring consumable cost and the most commonly skipped maintenance task in any office.
  • 46 dB - the quietest machine here. Lower than every other model in this range, including Dahle's high-security cabinets. It belongs in an occupied office.
  • 20 sheets a pass. 20 sheets of #20 bond, 22 of #16, at 20 ft/min. The highest sheet rating of any 23-gallon cabinet in this family by a wide margin - the P-4 50314 takes 16 and the P-6 40330 takes six.
  • Shreds CDs, DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips. Rated by Dahle for all of them, so a drawer clear-out does not need sorting into two piles.
  • Automatic jam protection. Senses an overfeed and reverses before the cylinders stall.
  • SmartPower energy management. SmartPower energy management drops the machine into standby and powers it down after 30 minutes of inactivity, so it is not drawing current overnight.
  • Lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty. Two years on the machine and life on the cylinders - Dahle's strongest cylinder cover, offered on its P-3 to P-5 models only.

What's in the Box

Dahle does not publish a full packing list for the 50310. Expect the shredder on its 23-gallon cabinet with the power cord. Shred bags are not included - Dahle 20725 (20-30 gallon shredders, 100 per box) is the matching consumable. There is no oil to buy: the machine is oil-free, so Dahle's 20721 and 20722 lubricants are not required and should not be used.

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 50310 for a small office of two to four people that shreds a steady stream of ordinary internal paper - drafts, duplicate copies, meeting notes, spent correspondence - and wants a machine that works without a maintenance habit attached. Twenty sheets a pass, 46 dB and no oiling makes it the most frictionless shredder in this range.

Do not buy it if your material is regulated, contractual or genuinely confidential. P-3 permits particles up to 320 mm2, and at roughly 189 mm2 the 50310 is a mid-range P-3, not a borderline P-4. Most privacy policies and client agreements expect P-4 or better - and for that the Dahle 50314 is the same oil-free cabinet, the same size, the same 46 dB, at 16 sheets a pass. Do not buy it for high-security work either: the Dahle 40330 is the P-6 machine in this cabinet size, and no P-3 shredder qualifies under NSA/CSS 02-01. And do not buy it for a department - a 10.25-inch throat will not take legal or tabloid paper unfolded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does oil-free actually mean - do I ever need to lubricate it?

No. The 50310 is built so the cutting cylinders do not require added lubricant, and Dahle describes it as maintaining performance without that maintenance. You do not need oil bottles, and you do not need lubricant sheets - which are in any case a poor idea in most shredders because the paper backing can build up. Do not add Dahle 20721 or 20722 oil to this machine; it is not designed for it.

Is P-3 secure enough?

It depends what you are shredding, and the honest answer for most businesses is: not for everything. DIN 66399 P-3 allows particles up to 320 mm2, and the 50310 produces around 189 mm2. That is fine for routine internal paper where the risk is casual rather than deliberate reconstruction. For personal data, financial records, HR files or anything covered by a client confidentiality clause, P-4 is the normal expectation - which is the Dahle 50314 in the identical cabinet.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards and stapled documents?

Yes to all of them. Dahle rates the 50310 for CDs and DVDs, credit cards, staples and paper clips as well as paper. Feed discs and cards one at a time rather than in a stack. Even though the machine handles metal, staples and clips are still abrasive, so a constant diet of heavily stapled paper will shorten cylinder life - although the cylinders here carry a lifetime warranty, which softens that concern.

Will legal or tabloid paper fit?

No, not unfolded. The feed opening is 10.25 inches, sized for letter paper fed long-edge first. Legal (8.5 x 14) and tabloid (11 x 17) sheets will not enter without folding, and folding a sheet in half doubles its thickness, so your effective 20-sheet capacity drops accordingly. If legal paper is routine, look at Dahle's 12-inch and 16-inch throat models.

How many people can share it, and how often will the bin fill?

Dahle positions it for two to four users. Because P-3 particles are relatively large and do not compact the way micro-cut waste does, a 23-gallon bag actually holds fewer shredded sheets than the same bin on a P-6 machine - so expect to change bags a little more often than the security level might suggest. Dahle 20725 bags fit; they are not supplied with the machine.

Is it quiet enough to sit next to desks?

Yes. At 46 dB it is the quietest machine in this whole group - below the 47 dB of the high-security 40330 and well below the 64 dB of the 20396 high-capacity model. 46 dB is around the level of a quiet room with background hum, so it will not interrupt a phone call at the next desk.
