Fellowes AutoMaxª 550C Auto Feed Shredder

The AutoMax 550C is the model in Fellowes' auto-feed range that stops apologising about duty cycle. Where the 350C is rated in minutes before a cool-down, the 550C is rated for continuous operation — which, combined with a 550-sheet hopper and a 22-gallon bin, is what makes it a departmental machine rather than a departmental compromise.

The cutting head is the same P-4 cross-cut as the 350C, at 5/32 by 1 1/2 inches. You are not buying more security here; you are buying the ability to keep going.

Continuous duty changes how a shredder is used, not just how long it runs. A machine with a cool-down gets managed — people learn to shred in short bursts, or they give up halfway through a clear-out and leave a box beside it. A machine without one gets loaded and emptied until the job is done. In a records room or a department clearing archives, that is the difference between a task that finishes and a task that recurs.

The bin, not the motor, becomes the limit. Twenty-two gallons of cross-cut waste is roughly one and a half hopper loads, so a genuine all-day session means several bin changes. Order liners with the machine.

What's in the Box

Shredder with auto-feed hopper, 22-gallon pull-out bin and power cord. Fellowes specifies its own non-aerosol vegetable-based shredder oil, part 35250, and asks that the machine be oiled each time the waste bin is emptied. Aerosol lubricants must not be used in any shredder.

Who Should Buy This — and Who Should Not

Buy the 550C for a department, a records room or a shared floor that shreds every day and occasionally shreds all day. Continuous duty, a 550-sheet hopper and a 22-gallon bin mean nobody has to think about the machine's limits, and the materials list covers everything from stapled reports to obsolete discs.

Do not buy it if the security level is the point. The 550C is P-4, the same as the 350C, and if your policy names P-5 the AutoMax 600M is the machine for you — same cabinet size, same 22-gallon bin, also continuous duty, with a micro-cut head at roughly 28 mm². Do not buy it if the volume genuinely is a batch a week; the 350C costs less and its duty limit will never be reached at that rate. And it is far too much machine for one desk — the AutoMax 100M is the personal-scale answer.
