How much more secure is P-5 than P-4?
About five times, measured by particle area. This machine produces roughly 24 mm² particles; a P-4 cross-cut such as the 225Ci produces about 152 mm². P-5 is the level normally named when a policy covers personal data, medical records or financial account information. If nothing in writing specifies a level, P-4 is usually sufficient and gives you more sheets per pass.
What is the duty cycle?
Continuous, with a published maximum daily usage of 4,400 sheets, 200 cards and 10 CDs. That is a more informative rating than an on/off cycle because it tells you what Fellowes expects the machine to handle across a full working day. Roughly nine reams of paper is a genuine departmental workload.
Can it shred CDs and credit cards?
Yes, along with staples, small paper clips and junk mail — a wide list for a micro-cut machine. But note the daily limits: 200 cards and 10 CDs against 4,400 sheets. Hard media wears fine cutters quickly, and those figures are limits rather than targets.
Will legal paper fit?
Yes. The paper entry is 9.5 inches (240 mm), so US legal at 8.5 inches and A4 at 8.27 inches feed unfolded with room to spare. That is half an inch wider than the small-office Powershred models, which makes feeding a loose handful less fiddly.
How often will the 16-gallon bin need emptying?
Roughly every 600 to 800 sheets. Micro-cut waste is fine and packs densely, so a 16-gallon bin goes considerably further here than the same volume would on a cross-cut machine. For a department at normal volumes, weekly is typical.
How often should it be oiled?
Every bin change, with Fellowes oil part 35250 — and Fellowes' manual for this model specifically asks that the oiling procedure be repeated twice. Micro-cut heads generate a great deal of paper dust, and under-lubrication is the most common cause of a machine like this failing to meet its rated sheet count.
Is this NSA approved?
No. P-5 is not NSA approval, and the two are often conflated in procurement documents. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle — finer than DIN P-6 — and requires the specific model to appear on the NSA Evaluated Products List. The 225Mi is neither.
