Description

Among Dahle's NSA-listed shredders, the 40434 is the one that balances security against getting the work done. It cuts to 1 mm x 4.7 mm - DIN 66399 P-7 - takes eight sheets of #20 bond a pass, and empties into a 30-gallon bin, and the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List rates its throughput High. That last point is the distinction from the 40334 below it, which is rated Med at five sheets, and it does the job in a cabinet only 21.5 inches wide.

Key Features

  • NSA/CSS 02-01 listed with a High throughput rating. 'Dahle 40434' appears on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders under Dahle North America, Inc., rated High. Only a handful of Dahle machines carry that rating.
  • Eight sheets a pass at P-7. Eight sheets of #20 bond, ten of #16. For a machine producing 4.7 mm2 particles that is a strong figure - the compact 40334 manages five and the cased 20434DS four.
  • P-7 particle. 1 mm x 4.7 mm, within DIN 66399's 5 mm2 limit for P-7 and within the 1 mm x 5 mm ceiling of NSA/CSS 02-01.
  • 30-gallon bin. Sized so a secure office is not interrupting a destruction session to change bags.
  • Automatic EvenFlow Lubricator. Continuous oil feed across the cutting cylinders. On a P-7 head this is the single most important maintenance factor.
  • SmartPower energy management. SmartPower energy management drops the machine into standby and powers it down after 30 minutes of inactivity, so it is not drawing current overnight.
  • Automatic jam protection. Detects overfeeds and reverses.

Dahle does not publish motor wattage, current draw or a rated continuous duty cycle for this model, so those figures are deliberately omitted rather than estimated.

What's in the Box

Dahle does not publish a full carton packing list. Expect the shredder on its 30-gallon cabinet with the power cord. Shred bags are not included - Dahle 20725 (20-30 gallon shredders, 100 bags per box) is the matching consumable. Lubricator oil is separate: Dahle 20721 (12 oz) or 20722 (1 gallon).

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 40434 if you need NSA-listed destruction and you have a working volume behind it - a SCIF, a cleared contractor facility, a government records office. It is the best throughput-to-footprint ratio in Dahle's EPL-listed range and the NSA list itself rates it High.

Do not buy it if you need a wider throat: at 10.25 inches, legal and tabloid stock will not enter unfolded, and the Dahle 20394 is the EPL-listed machine with a 16-inch feed and a 50-gallon bin. Do not buy it if the machine has to travel - that is the Dahle 20434DS. And do not buy it if your requirement is commercial rather than classified: P-7 costs you seven-eighths of your throughput compared with a P-4 machine of similar size, and it takes paper only. One further caution about its close sibling - the Dahle 40534, which offers a 12-inch throat and a 38-gallon bin at the same particle size, no longer appears on the current NSA/CSS EPL, so if the listing is a hard requirement, the 40434 is the safer specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dahle 40434 on the NSA list?

Yes. 'Dahle 40434' is named on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders under Dahle North America, Inc., with a throughput rating of High, and it remained listed in the April 2026 quarterly update. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires both a maximum 1 mm x 5 mm particle and the specific model being on the EPL. The 40434 meets both tests - its 1 x 4.7 mm cut is inside the particle limit and the model is listed by name.

What does the 'High' throughput rating on the EPL mean?

The NSA list carries a throughput indicator alongside each approved model. Among Dahle's listed shredders the 20434DS is rated Low, the 40334 Med, and the 40434, 20394 and several others High. It is a relative measure of how much material the device can process, not a security grade - every model on the list meets the same 1 mm x 5 mm destruction standard. It is useful when sizing a machine to a facility's daily volume.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards, staples or paper clips?

No. Dahle rates it for paper only. The cutting cylinders are precision-milled to produce a 1 mm wide particle and metal or rigid plastic will damage them. Remove staples, clips and fasteners first. For optical media in a classified environment you need a separately approved device - Dahle's 747 CS is the EPL-listed machine for CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray.

How does it compare with the 40534?

Same 1 x 4.7 mm particle, same eight sheets a pass, same 52 dB. The 40534 has a wider 12-inch throat and a larger 38-gallon bin, and weighs 146 lb against 105 lb. The important difference is not mechanical: the 40434 appears on the current NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List and the 40534 does not - it was listed in October 2024 but is absent from the January and April 2026 updates. If EPL listing is a requirement, choose the 40434.

What bags fit, and how often will I change them?

Dahle 20725 bags cover 20-30 gallon shredders and come 100 to a box; none are included with the machine. Change frequency depends entirely on volume, but P-7 output is very fine and settles densely once it has been in the bin a while, so the bag gets heavy before it looks full. Lift with two hands and seal the bag before it leaves a secure area.

Will legal-size paper fit?

No. The feed opening is 10.25 inches, sized for letter paper fed long-edge first. Legal (8.5 x 14) and tabloid (11 x 17) will not enter unfolded. Folding halves your effective capacity on an eight-sheet machine. If wide stock is a regular part of your destruction workload and you need P-7, the Dahle 20394 has a 16-inch throat and takes nine sheets.

What is the warranty position?

Two years on the machine, one year on the cutting cylinders. Dahle's lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty covers its P-3 to P-5 models only, so every high-security machine in this family - 40334, 40434, 40534, 20394 and 20434DS - has one-year cylinder cover. On a machine used daily for classified destruction, treat the cutting head as a planned replacement item.
