Description

The Dahle 40334 is the smallest fixed-cabinet shredder Dahle offers that is actually named on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List. It cuts paper to 1 mm x 4.7 mm - DIN 66399 P-7 - takes five sheets a pass and drops into a 23-gallon bin in a cabinet 21.5 inches wide. That is the point of difference from the rest of Dahle's high-security line: 40434 and 40534 offer more bin and more sheets, the 20434DS is portable, but the 40334 is the compact one that still satisfies NSA/CSS 02-01.

Key Features

  • NSA/CSS 02-01 listed. 'Dahle 40334' appears on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders under Dahle North America, Inc., with a throughput rating of Med. An accreditor checks the list, not the DIN number.
  • P-7 at 4.7 mm2. 1 mm x 4.7 mm particles, inside both DIN 66399's 5 mm2 P-7 ceiling and the 1 mm x 5 mm limit set by NSA/CSS 02-01.
  • Smallest EPL-listed cabinet in the range. 23 gallons in a 21.5 x 18.25 x 34.25 inch footprint. It fits in a secure office or SCIF anteroom without a dedicated room.
  • Automatic EvenFlow Lubricator. Continuous oiling across the full cylinder width, which a P-7 head needs more than any other cut Dahle makes.
  • SmartPower energy management. SmartPower energy management drops the machine into standby and powers it down after 30 minutes of inactivity, so it is not drawing current overnight.
  • Automatic jam protection. Overfeed detection and auto-reverse - important on a five-sheet machine.
  • 50 dB. Quiet enough to sit in an occupied secure office.

What's in the Box

Dahle publishes no full packing list for the 40334. The delivery is the shredder on its 23-gallon cabinet with the power cord. Shred bags are not included - the matching consumable is Dahle 20725 (rated for 20-30 gallon shredders, 100 bags per box). Oil for the lubricator is a separate purchase, Dahle 20721 (12 oz) or 20722 (1 gallon).

Who Should Buy This - and Who Should Not

Buy the 40334 if you have a real classified-destruction requirement in a small space - a secure office, a satellite field office, a contractor facility with a modest daily volume. It is the compact EPL-listed option, and at 50 dB it does not disrupt the room it stands in.

Do not buy it for throughput. Five sheets of #20 bond per pass is slow, and the NSA's own list rates its throughput Med. For higher volume in the same particle size, the Dahle 40434 is EPL-listed at eight sheets with a 30-gallon bin, and the Dahle 20394 takes nine sheets through a 16-inch throat into 50 gallons. If you need the machine to travel, the Dahle 20434DS is the cased version. And if your requirement is commercial rather than classified, P-7 is an expensive way to get there - the Dahle 40330 gives you P-6 in the same size cabinet at six sheets a pass, quieter, for less. Note also that this model takes paper only, and its cutting cylinders are warranted for one year rather than for life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dahle 40334 NSA approved?

Yes, verifiably. 'Dahle 40334' is listed on the NSA/CSS Evaluated Products List for paper shredders under Dahle North America, Inc., with a throughput rating of Med, and remained listed in the April 2026 quarterly update. NSA/CSS 02-01 requires both a particle no larger than 1 mm x 5 mm and the specific model appearing on the EPL. The 40334's 1 x 4.7 mm cut satisfies the particle requirement, and the listing satisfies the rest.

Can it shred CDs, credit cards or stapled paper?

No. Dahle rates the 40334 for paper only. The cutting cylinders are milled to a 1 mm tolerance and metal staples, clips or rigid plastic will damage them - an expensive outcome given the one-year cylinder warranty on Dahle's high-security models. Strip staples and clips before feeding. Optical media and cards need a separate approved destruction method; Dahle's 747 CS is the EPL-listed device for optical media.

Five sheets a pass - how slow is that in practice?

Slow enough that it changes how you work. Five sheets of #20 bond (seven of #16) means a 100-page file takes around twenty passes. For a secure office destroying a folder or two a day that is fine; for a records purge it is not. The NSA's own list rates the 40334's throughput as Med. If your volume is higher, the 40434 at eight sheets or the 20394 at nine are the EPL-listed alternatives.

What shred bags fit the 23-gallon bin?

Dahle 20725, rated for 20-30 gallon shredders and supplied 100 to a box. They are not included with the machine. These are 1.5 mil gusseted plastic bags that open to the cabinet's shape. P-7 output is close to a powder, so a thin generic liner is a poor substitute - it splits and you end up vacuuming classified residue off the floor. In secure environments the bag is normally sealed before it leaves the room.

Will legal-size paper fit?

Not unfolded. The feed opening is 10.25 inches, which accepts letter-size sheets fed long-edge first but will not take 8.5 x 14 legal or 11 x 17 tabloid. Folding works but consumes capacity fast on a five-sheet machine. If legal paper is a routine part of your workload and you need P-7, the Dahle 20394 has a 16-inch throat.

How is it different from the 40330 in the same cabinet?

Same cabinet family, same 23-gallon bin, same 10.25-inch throat, same 94 lb - but a different cutting head. The 40330 is P-6 at roughly 8.8 mm2 and takes six sheets at 47 dB; the 40334 is P-7 at 4.7 mm2, takes five sheets at 50 dB, and is on the NSA EPL. The 40334 is also about an inch deeper. If you do not have a classified requirement, the 40330 is the better value.

What does the warranty cover?

Two years on the machine and one year on the cutting cylinders. Dahle reserves its lifetime cutting-cylinder warranty for P-3, P-4 and P-5 models; all of its P-6 and P-7 machines, this one included, carry one year. That is a real consideration on a high-security machine, because the cutting head is both the part that wears and the most expensive part to replace.
